Had to be at work yesterday by 3 pm so I got up early, dressed in full camo and took the 350 Magnum .22 to get in a couple of hours of squirrel hunting in the 200 acre parcel of state owned land down the road from my home. The gun shoots RWS SHP's like a laser and hits hard so she's one of my favorite squirrel guns. I brought a bright orange hunting cap just in case there were any other hunters in the woods, but upon entering the designated parking site I quickly saw that as usual I was the only one there. Just the way I like it.
The woods were dead silent, no wind at all and the best part was there was just enough moisture on the ground to make quiet stalking possible. My favorite tactic in this section of woods is to slowly still hunt down the trails that meander through the woods and listen and watch for squirrel activity. There is one section of the woods where a group of black squirrels have built nests and since I'd really like to get one of them for mounting so I planned on hunting that section first.
I spent a total of 3 hours silently slipping through the woods and trails, and saw a bunch of squirrels, but never got a shot. I had plenty of squirrels within range, but they were all feeding on the ground and due to the thick brush and the fact that the squirrels were just very spooky today I just couldn't get a clear shot I felt comfortable with. Had a great time though,,, nothin better than slinking through the woods undetected and blending in with the trees and bushes. Got up early again this morning and planned on heading back for another go,,, but it's lightly raining and I'm not real fond of taking my babies out in the rain. May give tomorrow a try at the duck farm and bring the GAMO 1250 for some long range squirrel sniping :)
Oh, and I did see a couple of the black squirrels, they still amaze me, but never got close to any of them.
Went to work and had a great night fueled by a great day of air rifle hunting..... Nothin like being in the woods with an air rifle in your hands...............
