Interesting Talon project I may undertake...
« on: November 10, 2007, 01:38:41 PM »
I'd like some input from a few folks who are mor knowledgable about this subject than me... But here's my idea!

I have a Shillen .17 cal (powder burner) Heavy Barrel Blank with a 9" twist. The barrel fits into the Talon frame and has about .004" play (the set screws should take care of this)

I was thinking of machining the breech end so that it would mate up to the Talon, open up the chamber juuuuust a tad so that a Hornaday V-Max 20gr BULLET would push in with just enough resistance to hold it in place prior to firing.

Now as far as Valve Mods etc., I wanted to go with a Blodnob valve kit with new hammer spring and slightly heavier weight.

What I'm expecting is about 700-750 FPS with the 20gr bullet and about 10 shots per fill.

Now this is JUST an idea I thought up the other day. I'm still wondering if I should even sell my Talon (maybe if someone makes me a good offer :D) , but I guess what I wanna know is..... Would this even be possible with this barrel and a bullet vise an airgun barrel and heavier pellets like Eun Jun or similar?

I suspect you're going to need a lot more than 750 fps to stabilize one of those bullets, Sam.  And I think a Blodnob valve could do it.  Not as familiar with the .177 capabilities, but I can push a 28 gr. .22 EJ over 1300 fps with my Blodnob valve and a 24" barrel.  That's with a 110 gm. hammer and stock hammer spring.  Best I can do with an 80 gm. hammer and stock spring is about 1100 fps.  Just got some .177 EJ's but haven't tried them yet.  But 1100 fps with .177 Kodiaks is no problem.  And that's from a 12" barrel.  I need to get some heavier hammer springs, I think the stock spring is limiting my capabilities somewhat.  Even at that, Sean's valve is far more powerful than I can take advantage of with the pellets that are available in .177 or .22.  Maybe a .25 barrel and the 42 gr. EJ's would be more in line with what it can do on the high power end.  I've considered a similar idea to what you want to do, but in .22.  Have a barrel machined that will handle .223 dia. bullets.  Lots of options in that caliber and size in the 35 to 50 gr. range.  Of course, after all that, you probably aren't going to do much more than duplicate what a .22 rimfire can do, so I'm not sure what the point would be :-).  But I'll be really interested to hear about it if you proceed.  Later.

Thanks for the info Dave!

Now that you've said it, I believe you're right about the bullet stabilization in the 700 FPS range...Seeing as how the bullets I chose are usually shot in the same barrel but with an exit speed of anywhere from 1900 to 3000 FPS LoL. Minor oversight on my part!

I'm still thinkin about doing it...but then again, I'm thinking why should I screw up a perfectly good barrel??? hahahaha

Thanks again!
