rifle rest

Hi I been using a step ladder for a rifle rest but I just came up with a great rifle rest it's a pain to drag a table and chair out in the back yard to do some shooting but what I found in a garage sale is a heavy duty movie tripod  probly the most ridge triopd I've ever seen it's clost to what the survayers use I put a piece of plywood on the top makes a great rest and it's adjustable too and in place of a sand bag I found in walmart a car washing spunge terry cloth covered like a dog bone shape for about 2 bucks makes a nice soft  rifle rest.

Nice work Howard, that's the thing about Airgunning, we'll build and modify something to help us in our venture's of airgun shooting. The wife dread's it everytime I walk into the house looking for something to adapt for airgun use hehe. Ed

Howie, thanks for sharing you idea.  Now I know what to do with my h/d tripod that has been gathering dust for the past 9 years.  My only question is what type and size of fastener did you use to attach the plywood to the top of the tripod and is it steady enough?

Mike, I missed your post before heading up your way.  If I can't figure a good solid way of mounting the plywood I'll take you up on your offer.

Gary, I don't know that I'm 100% correct on this, but I'm almost positive that the standard camera tripod screw thread, as well as the female thread in the bottom of the cameras to mount to tripods and other accessories has always been 1/4"-20. That's the standard SAE 1/4" coarse threaded bolt/nut you'll find in any hardware store. If I was at home, I'd check it out for you to be sure.

If you can find 1/4"-20 threaded brass inserts (the kind where you drill a slightly larger hole in the wood, and screw the coarse external threads of the brass insert into the hole, leaving you with useable brass internal machine screw threads), you should be able make up a plywood platform or other kind of wood fixture to attach to the top of the tripod. You could use the T-nut style of internally threaded insert which hammers into the hole, but they don't have as much strength in tension and can pull out of the wood easier, IMO.

I attached the ply wood to the stand with some 1/4 -20 screws that were not doing anything now they have a job I use it standing in the garage it gives me about a 10 yd range but i use it sitting in the back yard and that will give me about 25 yd. range beats paying to go to a range , to bad I can't shot the 22lr in the yard. ha ha  I am using a box of boxes I got from the post office they come in 25 boxes per carton and you can get them shipped to you free on line don't tell them you want them for a back stop for air guns when the front is all tore up turn the box over you have a nice new backstop the pellets go in about 1 to 1 1/2 " the box is solid cardboard works great. Im using a flatrate box it's about 2 ft x 2 ft.
