Shrouds and hunting
« on: December 02, 2007, 12:37:21 AM »
Shooting my pcp QB78 a lot around the house recently and have almost decided to get a shroud for it. Been kinda back and forth between a shroud or a brake, but almost certainly going to go with a shroud. I've read that the POI can change significantly when switching back and forth between shroud/no shroud. Since this rifle will be used for hunting as well as plinking around the house, I was wondering if there are any issues with hunting with a shrouded rifle. I wouldn't want to remove the shroud and re-sight in whenever I go hunting.

Keith, generally a shroud/brake just extends about 1/32"past the muzzle end of barrel. There should bevery little or no POA or POI change with it. On some of my new air rifles I have removed the muzzle brakes which usually extend past the muzzle end of barrel at least an inch in most cases. I notice when I remove those brakes and check my POA and POI that it does change. Generally have to adjust the scope a few cliks to get her back in line. You can expect any muzzle brake that extends past the muzzle end of barrel to effect your POA and POI. A simple re adjustment of scope will bring you right back in line. Generally when someone installs a shroud/muzzle brake, they do not remove it. So once you have installed one or the other and resight your scope the air gun is ready to hunt, punch paper or what every you want to do with it. I think that Shadow and Longisleandhunter can varifiy this information because both have air rifles with either shrouds or brakes installed..:) Hope that helps... Gene

Keith, I have shroud's on several of my sweetheart's and havent touched the scope once. My B26-2 and B3's both carry shroud's with no problem's, maby a little extra weight. I've heard of barrel harmonic's changing with shroud's and break's but never experenced it myself, just installed the shroud and or break and tested for POI change. Each Airgun is different though and as you know these thing's will show up right away if the POI changes with a shroud. Gene of "AirGunToy's" machine's some FANTASTIC! shroud's for many application's and I'm sure that he will jump in here with some great advice. I hunt with all of my babies so I make sure that anything that I install on em will not hamper their ability to take game accuratly. Ed

Keith, if I'm reading between the lines correctly. Then unless installed by the factory, you would not want to be caught with it, in the back yard, or in the woods.

Quick note: I do not make shrouds/muzzle brakes to specifically deadin the sound of the muzzle report. That is against the law and I obey our laws..:)

Mmmmmm....uhhhhh......that's what I was afraid of. There so many people referring to things on the end of the muzzle as ldc's, muzzle brakes, etc. I've read various articles by the different govt. branches and have been afraid to put anything on the end of the muzzle that would deaden the sound, no matter what it's called. Guess I'll just continue to annoy the neighbors slightly.

I'm still going to get the aluminum brake with brass end cap. It'll look sweet on my QB!

Not exactly in line with what you were asking about, but there's a big difference in sound level with my Talon SS between the 12" barrels that are fully shrouded vs. the unshrouded 24" barrel.  With the 12" barrel installed, the shroud extends about 6" past the end of the barrel.  Because it's integral with the frame, it's a legal way to cut the sound level.  And it's legal to play around with various inserted items to make it even quieter, although I've found that just dropping the velocity makes about as much difference.  I do know that I can get it quiet enough that I can sit on my front porch picking off starlings in my front yard at 20-30 yards, and just have them look around when one of the flock falls over.  Last time I did that, I got 4 or 5 before the flock moved off another 20 yards, after a couple more, they finally decided it wasn't a healthy place to be :-).  So IF you can get a rifle that is factory shrouded, you can cut the noise legally, and still get excellent accuracy.  BTW, not much change in POI between the 12" and 24" barrels, and I think most of that can be attributed to the different power levels from changing barrels.  Later.

so what exactly are shrouds for anyway?  I thought it was just to make the gun look nice, not cut down on the noise.
