Moderator/MuzzleBrake Question
« on: December 08, 2007, 10:56:20 AM »
Hello all :)
To keep noise to a minimum whilst shooting in my garden I have a moderator/MuzzleBrake fitted to my Carbine QB78. Do folks think it should reduce the muzzle velocity of my gun? I seem to get more penetration through a thick telephone directory without the thing attached to my gun. Looking at the entry and exit holes on the mod/sil I cannot see any signs of the pellet touching anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Alan

Hey London177,

just to let you know the discussion of MuzzleBrakes, moderators, etc are not allowed on this forum as it is based in the United States where such pieces of hardware are treated the same as Class 3 firearms...a.k.a. machine guns or full auto weapons.  Please see the forum rules under the "Office" link up above if you have any other questions regarding that rule.

As for answering the question, I personally have never had a muzzle brake slow down the velocity of my airguns, but if they lowered the sound they may change the "perceived" velocity of an airgun....as in it doesn't sound as powerful, and maybe the muzzle flip is reduced a bit on a gas gun.  Try running it over a chronograph if you have one available to see if you are really getting measureable differences with/without the attachment installed.  I've seen guns that sound like little *_*_*_*_*_*cats shooting 10.5 grain .177 Kodiaks at around 980 fps, so I know first hand that it can be deceiving.  Also are you noticing a huge change in POI?  I had a muzzle brake that was clipping the pellets as they left like you describe and the shots were all over the place, I would think you would notice that more than how much penetration you are getting into a phone book.  Hth!

Edit: I guess I can't say "*_*_*_*_*_*cat" without using the word *_*_*_*_*_*, which the board obviously doesn't like...oops!

Crumbs! I never gave it a thought. My apologies   :0
I must try and get a chrono to test it.
You are right about the clipping. This one is fine but my old one was all over the place - duck for cover when that was being used....
Moderators no worries if you delete this thread. Sorry if I broke the rules.
regards,
Alan

No problem, just wanted to make you aware of the policies here.

The conversation starts innocent, then before long people start describing how to make stuff, then someone makes one, then someone goes to prison.  I don't pretend to understand the laws about such things here in the States, but I have to live by those laws.  Since the forum is owned and hosted here discussing such things is discussing breaking the law....even if it is an odd law.  Also most of us really don't want to bring our sport/hobby under the scrutiny of the Federal Government.  Just not worth it.  Thank you for your understanding.
