I NEED HELP FROM YOU HUNTING EXPERTS
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:32:16 AM »
i need some help...i have a crow problem here in northeast pa, but i can't seem to get rid of them. i have a tuned g1 extreme that shoots 8.4 exacts 890-900 fps, and i'm taking shots at 20-40 yrds. i know i'm hitting their heads, because i can see their head move first after i take the shot(and because i take squirrels at up to 50 yrds, and never miss my target area), and after the pellet hits, they fly off, apparently unnafected. this has happened at last 8-10 times...and i have yet to kill a single crow!! is my gun not powerful enough? i thought i needed at least 8 ftlbs of energy at impact, and at the closer shots, i def had more than that...are these just crows on steriods? they don't even seem to be hurt when i hit em...just like i tossed a pebble at em, and they got too annoyed and decided to fly away for the time being, only to come back later. i have a super streak on order(and ordered it the day the .22 cal was available, so i'll get mine in the first batch of shipments), but who knows when that will be...they changed the ready date 2-3 times already...i'm going to start trying with my sisters .22 cfx, but it only gets another ftlb more than my gun, so idk what it'll do...i'm really confused...is the head(right behind the eye) not the place to aim at with crows?

any advice is going to be appreciated, so please don't be shy.

Dave

Hay Dave,

In my experience with crows, about one half of the bird is feathers, and they are tough birds ! I have hit them with a 12 gauge shotgun, #6 shot, and they really try hard to fly away.

I would use Jeff's and Ed's favorite pellet, the Predator, and aim for the eye or just behind the eye. That should help your percentage of kills !

Good luck,

Bill is correct about the feathers. Many pellets I have fired at crows (and pigeons, too!) have simply ruffled feathers as they flew through, never making contact with vital area. Keep in mind, the feathers stand off the bird's actual silouette up to 1/2" away from the skin. As Bill said, aim for the eye or directly behind it. A squirrel has a much bigger melon, thus a larger kill area. Good luck with the hunting!

Sound's like you need a Predator for better penatration. As said crow's are some tough fella's so I alway's go for a head shot if possable or a clean breast shot. The feather's act as a flak vest for them bird's and getting through it can be a challenge at time's, mainly the wing and back area. I haven't had a bird that I hit with a Predator fly away yet, knock on a wood stock hehe. Also you might try to set up a blind closer to em to hit em harder if need be. Keep us posted on your hunt. Hey Dave,,,,

My vote goes to the Predator pellet also,,,, they've never failed me yet.   I've taken a few crows with the predators and they went right down.  These were straight on breast shots and the birds dropped like rocks.  I've also taken a few with CPL's, again breast shots, and they went down also.  Give em a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.....

I've never had the chance to shoot any predator pellets but I hear they are real good.

I've always hunted with Crosman Hunting Chasse 7.9 grain pellets.  They shoot better than anything else I've ever tried in my .177 CFX and have great penetration.  I have killed well over a 100 squirrels using these pellets no problem.

As far as bird hunting goes though I haven't had much experience.  Whenever the starlings attack my yard I let them have it though.  The last time they were here I killed a dozen of them dropping them left and right before they knew what was happening and flew to another yard.  I took mostly neck area shots and even some body shots and dropped everyone I aimed at.  Some of them would just hit the ground while others flew off a few yards and then fell but I got them.  I remember the first time I killed a starling though when I was younger with my gamo delta at about 40 yards.  I shot the thing right through the eye.  The shot couldn't have been any better and it flew a good 200 yards before it dropped out of the sky into a field and then I still had to ring its neck!!  So what can I say??  Crows might be tougher than starlings.

Hope I didn't confuse you anymore,
Brian
