Need help with 12ga
« on: December 20, 2007, 01:35:18 PM »
Just picked up a Mossberg 500 Persuader. First powder burner, haven't shot it yet. Question - it's soaked with factory grease - inside and out. I know how to deal with it on the outside, but not sure about the guts. Should I leave it as is? Or tear down, clean and give it a "lube-tune"? What kind of lube to use? Tried to google it, but came up with too much garbage to sort through.

Any input from shotgun owners are welcome

Well Chris,

I have always cleaned everything that I could reach, without disassembling the gun.

I would remove the barrel and magazine tube only, and clean the rest without further disassembly. I would leave the grease on the spring for lubrication when reinstalled into the magazine tube.

That's just how I would do it.

I usually doche it all out with carb cleaner*(remove wood first)*and then re-lube,mossburgs been buildin them by the millions, they got it down, theyre easy to work on,can go without cleaning for a year ata time(internally)and for the price diff with an 870 that`s icing on the cake.Just my .02,so be4 the hate mail starts I own both.

I agree with Tat2. Clean the heck out of it. Use carb or brake cleaner & blast ALL the factory snot out of it. Then relube with a good oil like Ballistol, Hoppe's or my favorite "All Around" cleaner & lube: Break Free CLP (smells good too!)

Leaving the grease on the srping makes for smooth loading etc, but if any crud ever gets in there then you may end up with misfeeds. Especially if you're out duck hunting in cooooold weather  :o . Nothin sucks more than hearing the firing pin fall when you KNOW theres one round left!

Thanks guys.
I assume just lube all the slides and moving parts. I will take it apart this weekend and play with it.

Thanks again

Hello preez, I've had my Mossberg 500 for over 15 years and that shotgun has NEVER failed me. I give it minimal lubrication on any metal to metal contact areas such as the slide rails and bolt. I use a silicone gun cloth to keep the outside clean. Clean the bore real good and flush out any crud grabbing grease off of the trigger mechanism as it is a part in itself that can be easily removed. I would try and get every bit of the factory grease and oil off of it. I like to use FP-10 for lube on powder guns as I have found it to work really well. Also, try to use a plastic safe degreaser as I have melted some plastic and removed factory camo with the other stuff.  Mine is more dry than lubed right now and is smooth as glass. The more lube you put on it the more places dust and dirt have to stick. Hope you have fun with it, good luck.
