Valve lock issues.
« on: December 22, 2007, 06:27:55 AM »
Can someone explain valve lock for me? Specifically, I have a used .177 B50 I recently acquired. I knew it had issues when I got it, and one of them is a tendency to valve lock at anything over 2K psi. I know, there's really no reason to fill more than that, but it just bugs me. The thing is rated for a 3K fill, it should work with a 3K fill, my Talon does.

I just tore it down for cleaning, polishing, and leak chasing. One of the things that caught my eye was the valve spring. It seems WAY stiffer than needed, and it seems to me that lightening that up would go a long way toward reducing valve lock. I'm using a lighter hammer spring (per The Book), and still getting good power, but no curve. At a 2K fill, it starts in the high 800's (with CPH's) and drops steadily. It's at ~1500 psi after 30+ shots. With a 2500 psi fill, it starts in the low 600's (partial valve lock) and is back in the high 800's after 40 shots, then starts dropping again. I could probably live with this, but the ES and SD are also really high, I can't seem to get it to settle down. Granted, I've really only just started playing with it, so this might be jumping the gun a bit, but any help here would be much appreciated. Not concerned with accuracy at the moment, weather has me shooting indoors at only 10 yards. TIA, guys.

Valve lock answers:

Valve lock occurs when the pressure is too high for the hammer strike to completely open the valve.

There are a few thengs you can do for this.

A lighter hammer spring, the "BOOK" tells you the correct McMaster Carr spring for your application, your current fill pressure wil stay the same with it installed, but you will see increased shots at a nicer spread.

If high fill pressure is your goal, brass washers combined with the stock hammer spring will hit the vavle with enough force to open the valve completely.

If I were in your shoes the first suggestion is the best answer, or you can combine the 2 suggestions and expiriment on wihich is best for your set-up.

My old bam had 2 brass washers, a lighter spring, and a medium sized transfer port.  It gave me 45 shots at 19FPE in .177 filled at 2,000psi.

What size brass washers(ID & OD) did you use?
