As we like to say in S.Africa " n Boer maak n plan"( A"farmer" makes a plan )" whatever gets the job done" When i stripped my springer the last time, due to a broken spring,we used 4 arms and a 90 degrees flat service on a workbench to "compress" the spring. I clung to it like hell to make sure everything stayed where it is supposed to. One guy i know actualy dented his fridge when he fieldstipped his springer on the kitchen table. He says the spring flew like a bat out of hell and his wife wasnt impressed with him either.

used my bench vise twice now to open a springer.  works like a charm.  I made a board up with a clamp and screw it to the bench top.  John

Gentlemen, although there are many ways to disassemble springer air rifles, the above ways are not the safest ways to do it. Due to the fact that we have such a diversified membership of young men, women and new air gunners included, these methods are not safe and the majority of the GTA membership does not practice such unsafe procedures. Some new members may take your ideas and get seriously hurt because they do not know or understand the power of the spring tension of most springers. I seriously urge you to not post these methods on the GTA. One of the main goals of the GTA is to practice safe air gunning.

HI Gene,

apologies, was not trying to insinuate that my method is the safest but under the circumstances it is pretty effective. The block clamped on this side of the receiver was to prevent it from "coming my way" should it decide to jump out. The spacer between the back block and guide is self centering which keeps the spring nicely centered when releasing the pressure using the wise. I would also not suggest using a hammer to remove the pin. I just adjusted the tension to the point where I could push it out preventing sideways pressure on the setup. I also pushed it out my way against the block. But yes you are correct. Unless you take responsibility for these types of actions and put precautions in your actions one should not try these methods.

JTK ,I Dont know of any positions currently available , but ill keep an ear to the ground. I will definately try to use a spring compresser next time, i dont want to encourage unsafe behaviour. Sorry guys. Thanks Gene for pointing that out. I am still a newbie and i try my best to learn from the WISE.

I think there's still tons of stuff that i can learn from the GTA. Keep on posting the technical stuff.

Hello everyone,
 I made my own safer version of this compressor today to clean, debur and lube my new crossman quest. My wife and I ordered on Dec. 13th a Quest for my 14 yr old sun from *_*_*_*_*_* sporting goods.com it had garenteed x-mas delivery. Well it didn't make it wasn't even close. I called and whined a few times and they sent us another rifle that arrived before the one I ordered. Anyway we got to keep both rifles for the cost of one.
 After fireing the rifle for a few hours I wasn't happy with it so I started looking online for solutions and found this site after 2 days of reading and research I was ready to tear the rifle down.
 Wow what a difference!!!!
 It was filthy inside I  mean dirty in a bad way a grity gunk coated most of the rifle chamber the spring ends looked like they had a non slip finish on them the piston was rough the tophat had a huge nick in it and was surounded buy gunk.
 After a total cleaning I sanded everything that I could. Including the full depth of the cylinder wall, debured everything and gave it a lube job. Once I was done and the rifle reassambled it was to late for tagert shooting so i fired it into a hillside a few times.

 defently worth the effort and i bet a pro could realy make a rifle sing!!!!

I glad that you found us ! This IS a GREAT PLACE TO BE !!!!

You sure received a good deal on the two for one rifle. You might want to post a photo of your spring compressor, and if you have a chronograph, some before and after readings of your tuned rifle.

I hope to see you post often, new thoughts and ideas are what make for great improvements.

I've done at least 20 guns this way. It seemed too obvious to me one day while shopping at the hardware store.

Hey Dan,

How long of a clamp are you using?  I have a few smaller ones, maybe good enough for a spring pistol.  Those clamps are bar none some of the handiest tools in my shop.
