First kill, and silent trap.
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:45:40 AM »
I got my GRT-III Wednesday. I pulled the scope off my Whisper, took the stock off and installed the trigger in about 15 minutes. Put the scope back on and took a practice shot in the dark at a log out back. Wow what a difference that trigger makes. Can hardly wait to have Bob tune it this summer.
I was getting ready to head out to Home Depot to pick up supplies for the pellet trap when a flock of starlings flew into the backyard. Now who could pass up that opportunity. Grabbed my Whisper and settled the the cross-hairs and squeezed the trigger. The bird dropped like a rock didn't even fall off the log he was standing on. From 20 yards with RWS match pellet in one wing out the other. So nice to be able to squeeze and not pull.
Hopefully the pictures come through. The pellet trap cost me right at 50 bucks and that includes the electrical putty. I think I will sand it a little bit and give it some paint. I used poplar so hopefully it will hold up.

Hey Dan,

congrats on a fine shot.  Nothing better than a pic of a beautiful rifle and a dead starling  :)

Thanks for the thumbs up guys. You are right Bill it is poplar. I thought it would last better than pine or something soft. Just the wood was 25 bucks for a 6' chunk. But shooting into a nice pellet trap priceless. Starlings are about all I have to shoot around my place. There are some river otters that make a mess of my things. I might just buy a trappers license this year, and trap one with the Whisper trap. Have to get it sighted in perfect before I try that.

Do you have plans for the trap. I had a set for making a Dr. Joe trap but lost them in a move. I have an Archer trap, it works great but is not nearly as nicely made as Dr. Joe's traps were.

Hi Bob  No, i didn't have any plans. I just went slow and measured twice, three, and sometimes four times. I used 1 by 12 poplar that was 6 feet long. Hardly had any waste left. The sides are 13" tall the back is 12 1/4" tall. The Top, back, bottom, and the little piece in the front are all 8 1/2" wide. Then I cut a 1/4" deep groove down the two sides and the bottom for the clip board to slide down into. The clip board is 9" wide. I used glue and a finish nailer. I could try to doctor up the picture for you if you like. Hard to explain in words.

Thats a very nice pellettrap there DAN!! Might just try my hand at a little carpentry.(actually i'm gonna ask my buddy Simon.) At least i'm honest. I suck at woodwork.

Enjoy shooting into your new trap.

Yeah, somehow I missed this thread also....oh well,  excellent job on the pellet trap and great shot at the grackle/starling.  That pellet trap looks beefy...how much does it weight?

Thanks for noticing guys. Better late than never. Stanley with the electrical putty and the heavy poplar I bet it is close to 15 pounds. I don't have to worry about it ever moving.  A little scared to shoot the Talon into it. Anyone shoot a Talon .22 at 900 fps into a trap with 1 1/2" of putty in it?  Holds the whisper fine at 10 yards. Pellets only seem to go in about 3/4 of an inch.

Heh heh...I only shoot Grackles, Starlings, Crows and Pigeons.....unlike you I haven't shot any nutters (yet).

Crazy4salmon....you might try to shoot some 2X4 with that Talon first....I have read that the pellet (Don't remember which caliber) might go through one of them at full power!!!!!....Maybe better to stack two 2X4's back to back....just in case.

I have heard the same thing Stanley. This weekend I will put up a chunk of 2 x 4, turn up the dial and give it a shot. Kind of like Mythbusters. That is one of the reasons that I am scared to shoot the Talon into my trap.:-)  The only heavy pellets that I have are Kodiaks. I will give them a try, and of course take a photo or two for the airbuds.
