Did the same thing I did yesterday,,,,, got home from work and changed into my camo hunting clothes, but this time I grabbed the .22 cal TF-89 for her first foray into the woods. Aimed the truck towards the same section of state land as yesterday and within a few minutes was pulling into the designated parking spot. Got geared up, loaded an RWS Super Hollow Point into the 89 and headed off into the woods.
I slowly still hunted the foot paths of the woods until dark but never came across a single squirrel. I know they're in there but for some reason they just weren't out foraging for food today. Maybe it's the big winter storm that all the weather reports say is headed our way, but whatever the reason there were no tree rats to be found :(
Towards the end of the hunt I sat on a large fallen tree and did some target practice using a dead tree stump 20 yards away as my target. Using my "new and improved" hold for the rifle (my left hand placed 1/2 way back on the forearm) I was able to stack pellets one on top of another. It still amazes me that simply moving my left hand further back on the forearm could make my initial accuracy problems disappear,,,,, but if thats what the rifle likes then that's what the rifle likes :)
After the target session I started a slow walk back to the truck, scanning the briar thickets for rabbits as I walked. I was about 10 yards from the truck when all of a sudden I spied a rabbit hopping his way out from under a briar patch. I put the rifle up and waited for the bunny to reach a small opening that would offer a shot,,, but it was not meant to be. The bunny stopped dead in his tracks just before reaching the opening,,, looked at me,,, then turned around and leisurely hopped back into the briar patch. Oh well,,,, can't win em all.... Walked back to the truck and headed home.
Had a nice peaceful couple of hours in the woods and had a good time with my short target session so even though the game pouch was empty it was still a great day in the woods.......
