pellet test w/Whisper
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:25:47 AM »
Just plinking around in my livingroom with my new toys. Thought I would show you guys and gals. The top two target are RWS hobby, middle RWS Superpoint extra, and the bottom two Crosman PHP. I put ten pellets into each target. My gun doesn't like the Superpoints. They are a little loose fitting and not very accurate. Not much expansion in the putty either.
I like the hobbies they cut a real nice hole, and they are what I have been adjusting my scope to. I have only put 200 pellets or so through my gun.
I think the Crosman PHP's group nicely out of my gun. Most likely the loose pellets are user error. I think I will now sight my scope in with the PHP pellet. These pellets expanded the most of the three, and all but two fit real tight in the barrel.  I am still looking around for some RWS Superdomes, heard they shoot well out of the Whisper.
Superpoint estras fit loosely in the gun, and dont group nearly as well as the other two. Dont think they will get much more action through my gun. My nine year old likes to shoot them because they look cool. At least they will get used. I put a spent pellet of each type next to their target. Sure is fun.

That is fun Dan especially in your living room! I would try a few more pellet types just for some more fun too. I would give the JSB's a try. The preditor's are expensive but man they work great in all my rifles. I'll bet your nine year old will think they are ever cooler than the Superpoints. Just keep most of them for yourself. 8)

It is actually from my living room through the dining room into the entry closet. So if you come over to my house knock first. Would hate to get a pellet to the calf. Ouch. I have to order RWS Superdomes anyway, so I figure I will do the 4 tins for the price of three. Is this how my wife justifies shopping for sales? I could get the hang of it. :p  The preditor's will be on the list. I have some targets that I will be using them on. Tired of the otters eating my koi and crapping on my boat lines. They actually hike their butts up on the lines wrapped around the cleats. I don't know if they wipe with the cotton rope or not?  But the smell is nasty.

My Whisper is rather picky when it comes to ammo choice...

Out of everything I've tried, it seems to like Crosman Premier Dome Lites (7.9) the best  8)

I can see why pellets are like candy. Snake Eater have you tried the RWS Superdomes through yours? And is there a noticeable difference in noise after CDT worked his magic?  I will look for some Premier Dome Lites. Still waiting for the weather to warm up so I can do some distance shooting.

I so far only have two pellets to report on. The RWS SuperDomes at 8.3g and the supplied with the rifle gold Raptors. I made a target trap out of a box filled with magazines, towels and a bent plastic frizbee, all taped together with duct tape. Once the scope was sighted in, I shot in my house(no wind) at measured 8 yards shooting offhand. Two things I noticed is the scope sucks for close shots and a natural balance point just past the trigger guard on that bump which fits surprisingly right down the middle of my open hand palm. Both pellets shot fine at this distance in the house.(At 20 yards outside  the Raptors varied by inches ea shot and SuperDomes stayed accurate once compensated for a slight raise from being sighted in so close in the house). I then took apart my trap to see how far they traveled. I was shooting into bent double and taped Car and Driver magazines with LLBean season circulars in front of them. I found all the Raptors stuck in the circulars or 1/2 way into the 1st Car n Driver. What was stunning was out of 20 shots I found 18 and all but one looking perfect like you could shoot it again(Of course I did not do that), the one crushed Raptors was only slightly bent in the middle. Out of the SuperDomes I was able to find 23 of 30 pellets, all penetrated past the Raptors well into the 2nd Car n Driver magazine, and nearly all were smashed flat to one side. Only two spit apart. And 3 were in a whole form with just the domed part pushed back into the air bucket. Every pellet I shoot I give the once over inspection prior to shooting and throw away any even slight cosmetic deformities. Every single RWS SuperDome pellet fit precisely flush into the recess of the  barrel with just the slightest tightness. The Raptors on the other hand fall into the barrel sometimes micro millimeters past the flush recess of the barrel, very loose fit. Keep you updated when I get more shooting time and different pellets. Any suggestions for pellet preference will be entertained. You can get a nice pellet sampler pack from straightshooters.com

I'd get one and see how the different pellets fly in that whisper of yours.   I also wouldn't shoot the PBA Raptor pellets on a regular basis due to the "piston slam" issue.

Best of luck with the new shooter.

Can you explain the "piston slam" issue to me?

Does it refer to the lighter weight of the PBA's causing problems with springers?

As I understand it, the lighter weight of the pellet doesn't create enough resistance. If the pellet is heavier it has more resistance and slows down the piston, and you have less slam. From what I have read around 8 gr. is perfect for a .177. It is also said that going too heavy isn't good for your gun either. :0  "Must have good balance, Danielson", sorry just watched the Karate Kid last night on vs. Brought back lots of memories. :)
