Ok, Who has a Big Cat and what's your opinion?
« on: January 28, 2008, 10:32:22 AM »
I have one, and I had my problems at first. But once I ironed out all the little stuff it shoots great. Although, I still have to get me a GRT- III triggers. Everybody can't be wrong....lol.. I as just wondering what everyone's opinion on this gun was.

Mine's up on blocks, as it has barrel lockup/pivot issues (too loose) and I don't have time to tinker with it. I'm quite dissapointed with it as it lasted less than 500 shots.

I bought the kid next door a Big Cat for his B'day last week.  I've only toyed with it a bit sighting it in but so far I'm impressed.  I also just got my chronograph back today from a friend.  Maybe by this weekend I'll have some speed and accuracy numbers using various pellets I can share .

I had one till the one of the pivot ear on the barrel broke and I had to send it back to gamo they wouldn't sell me any parts. unless I was a dealer that locks you to their repair dept. it took weeks and weeks to get it back they sent me a new one and I got rid of it I really think it's to light it is hard to keep steady needs more weight and I don't think I'll ever get any more gano's too much plastic ant the twang is something else. I have a winchester 800x some plastic the trigger and the safty but no twand and has a funny style stock but shoots geat very accurate, and I like the china rifles all steel but they need you to do the qc and finich polishing the parts they skipped then they are good rifles.howie

Dont waste your money on any of the plastic bull barreled guns, they are to light and shoot to harsh( even tuned)- to mess with............just a money pit.......IMO,

Would your comment include guns such as the Big Cat and the Whisper?  I purchased the boy next door a Big Cat last week and in my opinion it's a decent gun for the money.  The Whisper might even be a better gun based solely on the review found here:

If I could get a Whisper or a Big Cat to shoot as hard and as accurate as my RWS 48, I'd trade in a heartbeat.  I'm tired of lugging around a 10lb gun.

Like BigCat said, its his opinion. Mine is completely different. I have a Whisper and love it. It also got me back into air rifles which is something I haven't done since I was a kid. I like the looks of it and it shoots well. My targets look like Gene's before they tuned it. Now I just hope that I can shoot as well after mine is tuned(not). Sure I spent $30 on a trigger and will throw another $145 at it this summer on a tuna tune. I only plan on having three shooters .177, .22, and a .177pistol, and they will be sweet. I wont have a huge collection with a pile of money into them, my closet is too small. I want a small collection that look great to me, and a small pile off money invested. That just me. IMHO  :emoticon:

I think your conclusion of bull barrels is over kill Troy. Other than the small Gamo's for the younger ones, the models with the basic hunter power plants are just fine. They are bit harsher out of the box but a good lube tune will take care of that. I only own one with plastic barrel shroud and that one is a Whisper and I love it..:) Especially the lite weight. Can never get tired of shooting it and it is very accurate. Of course that is my own opinion.. Take it as you wish...:)

I have a B ig Cat and am pretty impressed with it. It is a very harsh, twangy powerplant out of the box, but I think it is a good value for the money. I have a GRT-III trigger in mine, won't have a Gamo-Theoben triggered gun without one.

Here is the initial review I did on it:

I've had my big cat for over 45 days now and I only use it to hunt rats. To date i have taken down 627 rats, I have only taken 627 shots at rats so I guess it would be safe to say this is a fairly accurate gun. She sure loves them crosman premiers

I just bought a big cat and i love it! I think some of you are a bit spoiled by some of the pricey guns when it comes to noise and recoil. Ive been shooting my benelli nova 12ga. 3 1/2" all winterso i wasnt aware the big cat had any recoil. As long as i dont shoot those pba pellets i dont find the noise bad either. My gun loves the crossman premier hollow points also. I just ordered a new scope which is my only small complaint. The stock scope shot ok but it did tend to wander a bit. Id still say it was fine for most hunting purposes. The only complaints ive had against my gun in general have come from the local sparrow population he have been leaving death threats on my door. With  my limited experience with air guns....I think the Big Cat is a pretty good rifle.  Right now I'm breaking in all my new air rifles.....so I just use Crosman Competition Wad Cutters (Inexpensive too...)....which as everybody knows is not too accurate after 20 meters/yards.  With the Big Cat I'm getting 2 1/4" spread at 30 meters....which I think is pretty good (Plus my shooting suck...  :)  )  All my other new air rifles go over 3" with the wad cutters at 30 meters.

I'm sure your Big Cat is capable of even much tighter groups than 2 1/4" at 30 yards.  From the best I can tell the Big Cat I purchased is more accurate than my Whisper.  The Whisper can shoot closer to 1" groups at 30 yards.  If you have't mounted a decent scope yet, do it and you'll see what the gun can really do.
