Yesterday I heard something on the roof of my home. THAT in and of itself is unusual so naturally I braved the cold and investigated. I was very surprised to see a medium sized grey squirrel on my roof messing around near my chimney. I was NOT happy and was concerned that he'd been trying to make a home in there. Before I could get anything to remove him he ran off into one of my big trees, down and took off. I didn't see him again that day.
Today, I came home with the girls from grocery shopping and was very surprised and awed to see a beautiful and BIG falcon in Bruce's acorn tree. Just as I opened the door to take a picture he flew off. He was really big and healthy. I wish I could have gotten a picture. Anywho, about a half hour later I heard a familiar noise on my roof. THIS time I was smart and loaded up the 1322 first. Sure enough I looked out and there was the same damn squirrel running around on my roof near the chimney. Again he was spooked and ran for it. I shot once and missed him as he made his way down my tree. Then I watched him very carefully for about a half hour on and off because he never really left the area. He finally decided he was safe and roamed on over to the acorn tree for some lunch. Bad idea. I was ready this time and already had 45 pumps in the 1322. I slowly opened the back door and he ran for the acorn tree. I waited only 45 seconds or so and he was back on the ground. I put the scope on him, breathed slowly once while leaning the gun on the door frame and squeezed the trigger. I knew I'd hit pay dirt before he ever started the electric dance because of the loud pop sound as the pellet hit him. He danced for about 15 seconds and expired. In truth I was a bit surprised when I got to him because the shot hit him just under the ear and the pellet pushed its way forward almost to his nose where it was just under the skin on the other side of his head. Lots of blood in the snow with the dance routine.
1322 X 45 pumps X 14.5gr Crosman Dome = dead squirrel.
When I first started shooting in my backyard I measured just about every spot in my yard for distance. From my shooting spot on my deck to that acorn tree is 35 yards. Today however, I shot from the sliding door (inside) and so I measured from there to the end of my porch where I usually shoot from. It confirms to me what I'd always figured. The 1322 is a really accurate pellet lober. 41.33 yards from muzzle to squirrel point of impact. (*not position of corpse)
