Wanting a new PCP
« on: February 01, 2008, 08:59:59 AM »
I have been eyeballing the Air Force Condor in 22. I have not seen much mention here. Can any one give me feedback on this rifle or talk about the pros and cons of it.
This would be my first PCP. I like the idea of being able to adjust the power, and accuracy is important.

Tell me what you think.

  Thanks, Bruce

What are you planning on doing with it, Bruce?  If you're looking for a hunter, it's a good choice.  But if noise is an issue, or you mostly shoot targets at less than 50 yards, it's serious overkill.  I don't own a Condor, but I can set up my Talon to equal or even exceed the power of a Condor.  For most people, I'd recommend the Talon SS, in whatever caliber you like best, then add barrels as the need arises.  The SS is much quieter than a Condor, and can be made even quieter.  In .177, it's a 20 fpe gun, in .22, more like 30.  Add a longer barrel, and 40 fpe is easy, 50 is doable.  Of course, the noise goes back up.  If you want more detailed info, let me know.

I do want high power to hunt, but I also want to be able to dial it down to shoot in my back yard. I was thinking about getting the barrel shroud to bring down the noise.
It seems like this could be the best of both worlds. I shoot my CFX in the back yard into a bullet trap with no complaints from the neighbors, so I am thinking dialed down the noise would be about the same?

The problem is the Condor high flow valve.  The orifice is HUGE compared to the standard Talon valve.  That makes it really tough to dial it down enough for back yard plinking and still get any kind of consistency out of it.  The SS and Condor share the same frame length, so you COULD get a Condor and install one of the 12" SS barrels.  The problem there is, dialing it back enough to keep the pellets sub-sonic.  You can shroud the Condor, but it's an expensive after market accessory.  It also makes the rifle too long, IMO, probably in excess of 48".

How much power do you need for the hunting you plan on doing?  As I said before, a 12" barreled SS in .22 will give you 30 fpe with 21 gr. Kodiaks, with more than enough accuracy to pick off starlings heads at 40 yards.  And you CAN dial it down a lot for back yard/short range plinking.  And all the Air Force barrels interchange, so you can always add a different barrel length or caliber at any time.  I have 3 barrels for mine, 12" .177, 12" .22, and 24" .22.  With the short .177 barrel installed, I can get it quiet enough to pick of starlings without spooking the flock, and do it with enough power to reach out around 100 yards.  Swap to the long .22 barrel, and I wouldn't hesitate to take game up to coyote size out to 50 yards or so.  50 yards is my limit, not the gun.

All that said, I suspect you'd be thrilled with a Condor, I just feel that the SS is a more versatile starting point, and maybe a little more forgiving for a first time PCP.  Just don't expect it to be perfect right out of the box.  You'll need to invest the time to get it set up to shoot the way you want it to, with the pellet(s) you intend to use.  I've found that Kodiaks/Barracudas are the best pellets in these guns, and that applies to 2 different SS's with 5 different barrels and 2 different calibers.  The only thing else that has come close for me is the Eun Jins.

One thing I didn't mention, but I think is important.  I'm not sure that I'd consider any of the Air Force rifles the best choice for a first time PCP.  They're great little guns, but you have to be willing to do your homework and invest the time to get them tweaked.  If that's not something you're willing to do, pick a different rifle.  A good economical choice would be one of the Chinese B50/51's, but only if you order it "pre-tweaked" from Big Ed.  I think Gene put a link to his site in the Mall, if not, look at the PCP gate.  If you have lots of money :-), get an AA 400 or 410.  Expensive, but by all accounts, you get what you pay for.  Heirloom quality and near perfection right out of the box.  The 400 is a single shot, the 410's are repeaters.  If you want to do more homework on the Talon/Condor, check out the Talon forum: http://talonairgun.com/forum/  Hope this is some help, and like I said, if you want more info, let me know.  Later.

Here is a review I wrote about the condor recently.

If you need quiet, you can buy the after market shroud to have the ultimate in power and silence.  I have heard people say that with the shroud on the pellet impact is louder than the rifle, but the shroud will add another $200 to the price.  You can buy it from Airhog with a .22 or .25 caliber barrel with a moderator already on it.  Then all you need is the scuba connector and a air supply.  Modified crow magnums are pretty cool to use in this rifle because of the way that they expand.  Hope this helps some.

I have a B50 and would like a Condor. But I think I need a mild plinker like the Dragon Slayer. That little .50 caliber pill should be just the thing for a relaxing day of shooting bottle caps and toy soldiers.

If you want a big bore I would get the Sam Yang big bore 909s, it has about 20 more fpe of energy and gets a few more shots per fill.

OK, I could go for that. Is that the one that uses .454 round balls, or is it the 9mm?

hunter220, I took your advice and got the Big Bore 909 Light Hunter. Nice little mild plinker. I'm thinking about getting a Lyman Devastator .45 HP mold for it. Should be just the thing for beaver, deer and hogs. I bought an RCBS .457  round ball mold a few years ago for 20 bucks at a store that was getting rid of all their muzzle loading gear. It's a 67 dollar mold. I couldn't complain. I didn't really have a need for it at the time, but knew I could Ebay it for more than I paid, if necessary. Now I have a need for it. I'm happy.

I just got a Talon SS as my first PCP. I have had it about two weeks now. I LOVE IT, though I do love to tinker with stuff.

If you want lots of power there are .25 barrels and bigger than condor valves available to really get the power down range.

I think you will enjoy it.  I have never shot one but know others who have and they really like it.
