Fun with pellets
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:15:27 AM »
When I got my 52 in .22  (my 1st and only air rifle) I picked up a couple tins of ammo at a local shop just to see what was what. (Translation: I took the only 2 tins of .22 pellets they had).

After I finished off a tin of benjamin 14.3 gr I decided to invest in my own sampler, so I purchased the following:

Beeman Crow-Magnum - 18.20 gr
JSB Exact - 15.8 gr
Beeman Silver Bear - 12.65 gr
Crosman Premier Hollow Point - 14.3 gr
Logun Penetrator - 20.5 gr
Beeman Kodiak - 21.10 gr

Now from what I read, I expected the Kodiaks, the Exacts, and the Premiers to do the best.

What I found was...my 52 really likes heavy pellets...a lot.

I took 25 shots (5 shot groups, 5 targets per page) with each type of pellet.

The Logun  Penetrators did the best of all, followed cloesely by the Crow-Magnums.

It seemed that the heavier pellets required a bit of extra oomph to properly seat them in the barrel and maybe this helps.

Another idle observation was that (and maybe I am making this up) the heavier pellets seemed less hold sensitive -- meaning that if I was really on my game and didn't shake I could get some very nice shots with the Silver Bears or the Exacts or the Premiers.

But for some reason, the Crow-Mags, Penetrators and Kodiaks (to a lesser extent) just seemed more forgiving.

Now it could just be coincidence, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed this in their shooting experience.

Youkilis, the key words are "What I found was...my 52 really likes heavy pellets...a lot.".... That seems to be what I have found out also.  Now if you take another 52 and do the same test on it, you may find it may vary some. It might like a different pellet.

One thing is the flat  trajectory of  the pellet at a given distance. Change the distance and you may want to change to different pellet..

Just my opinion...:)

Actually, I wonder about that. I'd think that the heavier pellets would be more hold sensitive because they spend more time in the barrel, and therefore are more influenced by the movement of the gun.

Youkils,

I would say you have found the right pellet for your rifle. That is some excellent shooting. Keep up the good work and best of luck...
