Gamo CFX .22 loading problems
« on: February 04, 2008, 04:15:38 AM »
I have prior posted on this but am still seeking a solution for my difficultly in loading my CFX in .22 without the use of a tool to shove the pellet into the chamber. Most brands and types will just not load not matter how careful I am in starting them strait. I have to use another pellet to finish seating the first or use a tool. This really slows up a second shot and if you are not careful, you ding the skirt of the loaded pellet and the nose of the pellet used as a seating tool. Gamo's reply to my question as to what is up does not encourage me to send them my rifle. Any hints or have one of you had the same problem and solved it? My three thoughts are:
#1 The chamber is too tight to begin with
#2 The rotary loading port is not deep enough, sticks up a bit above the lower edge of the chamber opening
#3 The leade or length of the chamber is reamed out for a .177 pellet and is too short for a .22
I don't have the tools to measure these matters nor the machining skills to fix them. A bit of help or a lead to who can help is much appreciated. As my new .22 CFX from PeakChick gets here tomorrow, I am hoping this is not the same issue with that gun but have seen numerous posts on this matter before. By the way, the .22 CFX hits visibly harder than my .177, it sends the same rock off into the distance that the .177 just knocks aside.
   Thanks and keep shooting!

Bob, Just to encourage you, I have not had any problems with loading pellets in either of my CFXs. The .22 CFX that I sold you definitely had a wider pellet trough in the rotary breech on it than the one on my .177 CFX. I do notice that some pellets want a little extra push into the barrel breech to seat, but I have always been able to just give them a little push with the tip of my fingernail and they seated well. I was shooting BSA Wolverine FTs (JSBs) in the .22 CFX and had no problems.

Hey Bob, some pellets that I  have tried are harder to load than others. Peak is correct about that. I have stumps for fingers and a big thumb...:) but have no problem loading the pellets. Not to say that you not having problems but you may want to try different pellets. CP's, Beeman FTS, RWS Superdomes, JSB Exacts all seem to load very nicely in all three of my CFX's. Some of them being a bit tighter than others. Try different pellets and see what happens.. As a last resort hang your hand out the door of your truck as you drive along and let all your fingers tips drag on the pavement...:) You will get some hard calluses on your finger tips then... hehe   Just kidding..

Good Luck

Gene, Thanks for the input. I have tried CPL's, Gamo Hunters, RWS SuperDomes and JSB Predators, none will feed. The Gamo Hunters take a tool and the rest require a hefty push with another pellet or sometimes a tool. None will move into place with a fingernail or finger push. If a pellet loads, it is only for the first cold shot, I cannot imagine enough heat coming off the first shot to change anything but I have some hand loads in my TC Contender that get sticky after a few shots in quick succession. PeakChick has my new gun arriving here tomorrow. If it loads everthing, I will take the other CFX to my local gun smith and see if he can compare the various openings/parts for me.

Hey Bob... check to see if the rotary breech might be over rotating. It might be moving ever so slightly past the breech. Pretty common in many of the CFX's.

checked rotation
« Reply #6 on: February 04, 2008, 02:50:17 PM »
Good idea, I checked the rotation 1st as my .177 has a bit of that issue, the loading trough is pretty much dead center when open and no amount of left or right movement of the lever helps. You can see the loading trough move off center when the pellet is in the breach and it hits one side or the other with just the slightest movement. PeakChick's .22 CFX shows up tomorrow if all goes well and I will have my hands on a comparison gun for the first time. Thanks for the reply post CDT.

Received the CFX .22 I bought from PeakChick and just gave it a try with my two hardest to seat pellets, Gamo Hunters and RWS SuperDomes and there is no problem other that a bit of over-rotation on the breach, pellets go right in and need no more than a gentle push of your finger/fingernail to seat all the way. Will ask CDT if he will look this over when I send him the gun for a tune. By the way, Steph had put a CDT trigger in the new CFX and it is a blessing and a half. I cannot imagine a Gamo with a stock trigger other than for break in.

I had the same problem, mostly when I used RWS superpoints or JSB predators.

I fixed the problem by shaving the loading port troughs U-edge after disassembling the loading block from the gun. The u-edge is the troughs ending on the loading block that channels the pellet into the receiver hole of the barrel. I did this with a drill bit slightly bigger than the troughs width. Using a hand drill in a 45 degeree angle and at controllable low speed. I placed 1/4 to 1/3  of the drill bit on the edge of the U,  , I lightly shaved a 1mm wide section off the U's edge. It is a delicate procrdure so be careful. I don't think Gamo sales the rotating loading block to the public.

This worked for me and now my cfx22 excepts all kind of pellets. No more alignment issues with the loading port.

Thanks for your input, I think that the trough is the problem on my gun, it may not be full depth when the pellet is inserted into the chamber. Thanks for the post.
