Pigeons on the fly
« on: February 05, 2008, 11:37:13 PM »
To all of the people that posted to help me in Super Streak Going Downhill thread, here's a pic of the first 6 or 20 pigeons downed after taking your advice.  Thanks a million (or at least 20).  The SS is at the top of her game now!!  By the way these are all taken with Crow Magnums.

The pigeons here come with stealth technology pre-installed.  It makes hunting more exciting.  Actually though I did attach the file, but I guess it did not go through.  My internet is a satellite with sandbags holding it upright, so it sometimes doesn't work.  I'm trying again.  By the way went out and bagged 8 more last night.  I'm headed back to the states for a couple of weeks so they'll get a break.  I hope it works this time.

I have not eaten any, though I would (I'm from Louisiana and we eat anything that doesn't eat us first).  I don't have anything to store the meat in here.  We shoot them because they are pests and make a mess on our equipment. My friend and I had been using blow guns, but after seeing one to many birds fly away with large orange darts stuck through them, we upgraded to pellet rifles.  He is shooting a Tac Elitie .177, which after some work, is taking a fare share of birds as well.  We'll post a pic of our next hunt.  When I get back from R&R I may try to cook a couple.  They are not city birds; feeding in the fields during the day, so they should be fine to eat.  If anyone has a simple way to prepare pigeon on a grill let me know.  We bagged 15 more last night, it's the last hunt for a while.

Glad to hear you're still whackin em...  15 more, that's great.

As for grilling em,,,,, they tend to cook rather quickly once exposed to heat,,,, easiest way would probably be to simply impale them on a stick and suspend them over the fire,,,, or if using a grill you could split them down the middle and simply grill them on both sides until done.  Of course having something to baste them with during the cooking would of course help keep them from drying out to much but I don't know what basting ingredients you have available.  If you have some bacon strips you could use either one of the methods I mentioned and simply wrap the bacon around the birds before cooking.  The grease coming off the bacon would baste the birds as they cooked.

Oh man,,,, I'm gettin hungry,,,, I gotta go   :)

A good baste for grilling birds is butter/margarine, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Put a 1 stick of butter in the bottom of a small saucepan, pour salt on top of the butter till it starts running over the edges of the stick and add a bit more, then pour in lemon juice (RealLemon concentrate in the big green bottle works fine and is cheaper than squeezing lemons) in until it reaches halfway up the stick of butter. Then add ~1 tsp. of ground pepper. Heat slowly till the butter is fully melted and baste the birds occasionally when you turn them. Simple and easy to remember.

That's my dad's recipe for grilled chicken baste that he's been using since before I was born. The same small saucepan that he still uses is probably 1/2 quart (about as wide as a stick of butter is long) or maybe a little more. It's great on chicken, dove, and rabbit. Haven't tried it on squirrel yet.
