I guess they weren't nesting, since they didn't show up here this year.

Nice to see some good birds around.  I would pay good money to have one of those with an appetite for Grackle!

What a Great Majestic Bird !

Has anyone looked it up ? I have gone through my two books on Birds and cannot find one that quite fits this beauty.

But the size of the talionis, it looks like an immature Bald Eagle ?

GREAT photo Gene !!!!

Thanks for sharing with us all !!! I love these birds. :)

It most likely is a red tail hawk of the white under side variety. Red tail varieties range in solids to varigated colors. This one looks like an adult in full pride and relaxed on those thin twigs. It 's eyes are certainly zoomed in and looking directly at the morsel's head hiding behind the camera lens. Coopers hawks have that coloring too but tend to be much slighter in build and feather bulk. Attached is one red tail that I scout squirrels for on my property.

I showed Gene's picture to a friend of mine that used to work some with raptors, etc. and he's of that same opinion, Jeff.

He said in his email, "Looks like a red tail to me. The immatures have some speckling on the breast and don't have a red tail, so that one could be an adolescent."
