New 440, trigger and 1st kill
« on: February 11, 2008, 11:44:39 AM »
The nutter was dispatched from a ground floor window to 18 yards out and upward to limb 11 feet high. I had to use the tru glow sights. The squirrel was sitting up on it's tail. She presented a clean sighting to the head (or heart). See the clean headshot. Trajectory is in the cheek, thru the brain and out just below the opposite side ear.... Amazing that this nutter still held on to the limb, hanging on by the front left paw and death shuttered for 6 seconds before falling to the ground. Squirrels are tough critters!.   I got the my new $99 440 last Tuesday. Installed the GRTIII trigger blade and shot RWS super H point .177, .69 gr. pellets in my basement for about 35 shots to calibrate the Tru-Glow sights. Today at 11am this target presented herself and the 440 now has it's first kill.     Fellow GTA forum members flagged a Bushnell Sportsman 4-12 x 40 gloss black $40 scope I also got form Natchez with the 440, both on deep on sale pricing. Timing, timing and thanks for the leads to "what I know will be a fun set-up". The 440 and scope are waiting for delivery of medium AccuShot 4 bolt rings to arrive tommorrow with some more ammo. Some of you may have noticed that the 850 carbine that I also have is now removed from the classifieds... I am keeping it for my first a DIY tuner project, I like the feel of that gun a lot as it is but with the tune I'll have fun bringing it up to optimum performance for it's standard energy class. I was in Bass Pro shop and see that the 850 carbine, same physical rifle, is now branded by GAMO as Nitro 17 model.

Well done magnette.  Excellent placement and that rifle looks awful pretty.

Excellent shooting Jeff and a super pic.  Rifle looks purdy sittin next to her kill.   Just think how deadly it'll be once she's scoped..  :)

The GRTIII trigger is worth the price.     The blade's wider ridged finger pad feel and balance slide action for each shot sqeezed off transforms the Gamo factory trigger / controlled release action noticeably.   I recommend the blade for starters before slicking the trigger sear and lube tuning the rifle receiver. Along with the golden blade the gunner can feel what the trigger internals are doing during let off of a head shot on the target.      Yep, I am feeling good about today's hunt.    Tomorrow, I'll get my chance to mount the 4-12x40 sportsman scope for a step up to predictable accuracy. I really enjoy taking time for my sight-in tasks and getting all shot groups repeatably dead nuts on. I don't like shooting any less than predictable and safe.     By the way todays scope-less shot was from a sitting positon. Thanks for the recognition I'll have more posts in time.

I have two 440's and love them both. You got a great stock there. My iron sights on the latest gun from Natchez shoots so far left that with iron sights I cannot stand the sight picture as I look over the side of the scope mount. Both my guns are CDT tuned and they are perfect for rabbit hunting, light and they hit like a freight train. Mine like CPLs, Gamo Hunters and RWS SuperDomes. I just ordered a bunch of ammo from Pyramid and will try out JSB's of several kinds. I think that at these prices, you cannot lose.

Thanks, I like the stock too. Wood character is a gamble. it's grain and walnut color is nice on this 440. The left shooter side is "long ways" striped grain, pretty nice in the sun light. More important my 440 iron sights windage align just slight left of the center scale, but not an issue at 20 yards so far. Anyway my plan is to lock down the adjustable iron sight when the scope is mounted tomorrow.
