Sometimes dead on... Sometimes erratic...
« on: February 15, 2008, 09:55:47 AM »
I know alot of people in here are not happy about accuracy, but I can be a bit more more specific. Turbo tuned .177 CFX, Centerpoint 3-9x40 AO adjustable, Gamo 1 piece mount and shooting mostly JSB exacts 4.51-4.52. At 20 yards I will put 5-6 pellets almost all in the same hole and then all of a sudden 8-10 are all over the place. The good groups make me think that I am doing everything right, but under the same conditions it becomes erratic for multiple shots. Does this sound like a scope problem? I try to toss out the pellets that are obviously bad. The Gamo rings came with some double stick material on the inside. Has anyone found this material to be counter productive? I am used to shooting firearms and I am new to springer rifles. If there are any ideas or pointers they would be appreciated.

I am also new to airgunning and have the same setup as you, except a 3-9x50 Cetnerpoint AO.  I also have been having the same problem.  However, the more I practice the tighter my groups seem to be.  A tuned CFX is supposed to be a great shooter.  I have read a lot of articles of guys who buy fairly new guns back from people who claim they have poor accuracy.  The buyers say that most of the time its the shooter and not the gun.  Try reading the article on Charlies website, "Shooting Airguns Accurately."  I know how frustrating it is, but sounds like we need more practice is all.

Yeah, I have had the same problem with my Shadow 1000 since I bought it over a year ago.

The very last thing I checked was how well the barrel was choked, if at all. I found that every single brand of pellet, when pushed through the breech to the muzzle, felt tight at the beginning and quite loose as it neared the muzzle.

Maybe you could do the same and post your results?

Cheers!

PS: That sticky tape on the rings really do help stop scope creep, well, it'll stop the scope body from creeping back in the rings themselves. If the rings aren't tightly enough secured to the dovetail, the entire scope/ring assembly will walk its way back to the butt of the rifle. The stop pin provided really helps there.

For accuracy nothing beats practice. Springers are sensitive to hold, to pellet selection, etc. Try a selection till your gun picks the one it likes best. John

Just a thought...take off your scope and go with open sights. If you still have flyers after some good groupings, you know it's something other than your scope. I'm guessing that it's your scope mount/rings, but that's just my guess. Pellet selection I doubt is the problem, JSB's are usually very consistent. I have the very same scope as you on a B-30, while it's not in the top tier of optics, mine has held up well so far.

What confuses me is that I will go on a run of incredible grouping, literally 1/4 in. groups at 20 yards. Then it starts.. 1.5 in. high left, 1 in. right, 3/4 in. low.  etc....for about 8-10 shots and then good groups again. I'm used to firearms and I know bad shots happen, but the good and bad groups happen in cycles on my springer. I beat up my first spring and CDT is putting in a new one so maybe that had something to do with it.

Part scope... Part pellets...

I read alot of good things about JSB Exacts and I have found that they are part of my problem. Alot of bent skirts(which I toss out) and alot of randomness even with the ones I think are ok. I ordered some H&N Field Target Trophys and the groups immediately got tighter. The scope still walks a bit but my groups are not as random anymore.
