Gas Ram Opinions???

I have a Gamo CFX .177 on order but I'm highly considering calling and asking them to install a gas ram.  What's your opinion on the gas ram when it comes to longevity, power and accuracy?  How will it effect the previously mentioned in comparison to a steel spring set up?

I really like the gas spring version of the Whisper I recently tested. (same powerplant as the CFX) The cocking effort was slightly higher that the spring version, but like all gas springs, it eases up considerably for the last 25% of it's cocking travel. I'll have to get the gas spring version of the CFX soon to compare it to the factory spring version I recently tested--amazingly accurate as expected.

I have the Gas Rammed Whisper, I've fired a bit over 1000 pellets thru it so far and besides the scope slide she has held up well, and talk about power!!! Accuracy!!!!

i have the RX2 gas ram...all i can say is that there is nothing like it,........power,accuracy it will last a life-time....i don't know about the gas ram whisper.....personally i don't understand why anyone would consider changing a gamo springer  into a gas-ram.... there are enough legit gas-rams out there,to me it's like trying to get a chevy malibu to ride like a lincoln town car....it ain't gonna happen, again this is just my opinion..different strokes for different folks....i would just have the whisper tuned and you will be more than satisfied...good luck...shoot safe..

I enjoyed your Whisper comparison test and it surprised me when the gas ram actually spit them out a bit faster than the spring.  I thought I had read before that the gas ram typically slows the gun down.  I'm currently shooting a RWS 48 in .177 and really despise having to drag a little red wagon around in the woods to carry that burdomsome monster of a gun.  I prefer hunting with my boy's spring Whisper but as of yet I have not been able to keep it zeroed.  Tonight I removed that piece of soft aluminum riser and mounted the scope direct to the receiver.  The hole in the riser for the scope stop pin was already egg shaped real bad and I'm hoping it was the reason I couldn't keep the gun zeroed.

I agree with most of your comment.  The main reason I would consider a gas ram Gamo over a real-deal would be cost + weight.  I prefer the light weight and dollars saved with the Gamo.  But a tuned Whisper is not out of the question either.  Truth being, I purchased a Whisper with that in mind and probably will get around to that if my job hangs in there.  The different stroke is for a poor folk.... I'm doing the best I can with what I have at the moment.  The CFX might be my last forte if my job hits the skids.  I work for a local government who just announced they are so far in debt due to bad bond swaps that they may have to file chapter 9.  If that happens the last 18 years of my life may be wasted.  Let's hope the gas ram CFX is just my start into real-deal gas ram charged toys.  

just out of curiosity,how much does the gas-ram whisper cost....i think the springer is about $219......thanks

The Whisper runs @ $350.  I'm looking at the CFX and it saves a whopping $25 or so.  LOL  But weighs in at a hefty 6.6 lbs. that's what I like.

rob i meant no offence,my point is not to waste money on the conversion,again just my opinion.......i have read that the whisper is a nice gun,even better tuned...as we speak i am waiting for the deluxe version,which is a back order(i like the prettier stock)..when it comes in,i will send it to CDT for a good tune.....for me it's a nice springer that i will leave as one ......again i meant no offence and apologize if i came off that way......thanks...

I have 60+ employees that talk to me (or about me) a lot worse than anybody here ever could.  I didn't think for a second you meant anything bad.  I totally understand your point.  I simply want to compare a tuned springer to a gas ram gun.  If it were apples to apples I would simply buy a Whisper with the ram.  But then me and my boy may end up fighting for which ever of the two shoots best.  I can hear him now.. "Oh, dad, I reeeaaally didn't know that was your gun.  I thought it was mine.  You do know they look just alike right?"  That mistake can't happen if i have to different models.

i'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way....i was feeling a little bad,that's the last thing that i wanted...

I can't speak for the gas rammed Gamos being offered by Pyramyd, but I converted a CFX with a Theoben ram a little over a year ago.  The progression went from stock, to CDT tune, to gas ram.  Although I don't have it anymore (at the moment, that may change soon), that gun is still going strong, and is a very consistent 15 fpe rifle.  Don't know for sure, but it's got to have well over 5K pellets through it after the ram install, and with the right shooter, it'll stack pellets at 20 yards off the bench.  BTW, this gun killed 2 springs before it had 4K pellets through it.  And no, it wasn't dry fired, nor was it fed a lot of heavy pellets.  If I was still a springer guy, I'd do it again, no question.  The whole character of the rifle changed, all for the better.  But again, that's with a Theoben ram, I really don't know how the Air Venturi ram compares.  If anyone's interested, I do have several pages of chrony data for it, might be an interesting comparison.  Bottom line, I don't think you'd regret the gas ram.  HTH.

I wouldn't mind seeing your data on the Theoben gas rammed CFX.  I have data on both the Whisper and the Big Cat springers and they are very similar.  I think the thing that makes them different other than asthetics is the barrel on the Big Cat is not as tight as that of the Whisper.  Most cheap ammo falls into the barrel of the Big Cat and CPLs need a slight nudge for the last 1/32" or so.  The Whisper needs a wiggle and push for the last 1/16" or more with just about all pellets with the CPLs needing a stiff finger nail to bottom them out.  This is what I imagine causes the FPS difference between the two.  The Big Cat seems to be holding zero so I'm told by a 13 yr old.  Of course his scope is mounted directly to the receiver rail w/o any riser.  I hope the weather lifts soon so I can test the Whisper out after removing the riser last night.
