Whisper...Barrel Droop???
« on: March 14, 2008, 01:09:13 PM »
Hi Whisper owners,

Just installed the scope that came with the rifle.  The scope was already on the one piece mount....although not screwed on tightly.  I removed all the screws to de-grease them and put on some loc-tite.  At the bottom of the rear "C" ring (The one closer to the eye) there was a 1/16" soft foam layer.  I peeled it off.  My question is; DOES THE GAMO WHISPER HAVE THE FAMOUS BARREL DROOP AS THE RSW AIR RIFLES?  As I see it, the 1/16" foam would have tilted the scope downwards at the front....to line up with the barrel...if it's drooped.

I've only shot it 5 times at 5 meters and the POI is 1 1/4" low.  I don't know if they centered the crosshairs of their scopes before they leave the factory.

If the Whisper have a drooped barrel....I'll need to put that foam piece back under the scope....or at least some plastic film.   Replies please...thanks.

Hey Stanley,

Yes the Whisper seems to need some help, but putting foam or electrical tape will only be a short time solution, as these materials will compress in time, and you will be right back with the problem.

Use 35 m.m. film or cut some shims out of hard plastic or aluminum for a more permanent fix.

If you watched the P.A. Video you will see that they had this foam tape on there Whisper also ..

I hope this helps you,

Bill

Stanley
Don't know if you can successfully apply this to a Whisper but I had very good results using Charlie's barrel droop tool to correct that problem on my Gamo 440.

My Whisper had the extra shim material under the back mount too.  Even after removing it I still had scope creep and ended up removing the aluminum riser and mounting the scope directly to the receiver.  As for droop... my Centerpoint 4-16X40 seems to be doing just fine now that I've removed that extra tape and the riser.  The scope pin stop hole in the riser was starting to egg hard causing the scope to lose it's zero, hence the reason I removed the riser.

I heard or read somewhere if your Whisper came mounted it probably had the droop hence the tape. Mine was not mounted and did not come with the tape, and has no apparent problems to me....

The scope did not come mounted on our Whipser but the extra tape was already on the back of the mount as if though they expected barrel droop.  After removing the tape I was able to zero the scope but I haven't checked to see if things hold true to a trajectory chart from close to far.

Thanks for the replies guys....seems the consensus is that there's abit or some droop in the barrel of the Whisper...so I placed two pieces of plastic film under the scope at the rear "C" ring.  I'll let the loc-tite dry again before zero-ing the rifle.  THANKS.

I didn't have any problems with my Whisper. :0  Just mount your scope and see if you can sight it in. Don't use loctite until you know for sure that you dont have a droop problem. Good Luck

I don't see any problem with "droop" or scope mount if POI is 1 1/4" low only 16.5 feet (5m) from the muzzle. I suspect at 20 to 25 yards, the POI will be dead on. Think about it, the scope centerline is probably 2" or more above the bore centerline at the muzzle.

Hmmm...that's an excellent observation....I didn't think about that.  Now I've got 2 thin pieces of plastic film under the rear "C" ring....and loc-tited the screws...I don't want to unscrew and remove the films.  I'll zero in at 10, 20 and 30 meters to see how it goes....
