It Works!!!
« on: August 24, 2006, 04:13:08 PM »
I don't know about the rest of you, but I find having to rest the stock of the typical springer across my palm both awkward and hard to control.  Glad I have a CFX.  But since Charlie has my CFX, I've been shooting my freinds Shadow.  Although I finally figured out how to hold it so that it would mostly hit where I wanted it to, it was still awkward for me.  Then I remembered a suggestion someone had made on  a post somewhere.  Use a computer gel pad.  So I tried it, and son of a gun, it worked!  Even though I'm still trying to get the feel of this particular rifle, I was able to shoot a half dozen consecutive 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards.  That's about the same as I was doing shooting with the rifle rested on my palm, and I don't even want to talk about the "groups" I got shooting of my sand bag.  So maybe the gel rest that Pyramid Air sells would be worth trying, but steal the gel pad from your keyboard or mouse rest first to try.

Daved:

I am not familiar with the kind of gel pad that you are talking about.  I don't think I've ever seen one at the outlets in my area that sell computer stuff.

But I would REALLY like to give this idea of your a whirl because I also find "benching" spring-piston rifles off the palm of my hand to be a trifle uncomfortable at times.

Any idea where I can see a pic of one of these deals on the Net?  I'll try Gooogling, of course, but I'd like a little help here so that I know I'm looking at the item that you're talking about.

Try Office Depot, here's a link. http://www.officedepot.com/browse.do?Ne=5&Nr=200000&N=200461+4294966931.  Hopefully that will get you there.  Also check Pyramid Air, they sell what they call a gel rest, I think that's where I got the idea.  Good Luck!

I know my gel pad has a sort of "satiny" cloth covering it.

I wonder if the slipperyness of the fabric allows the action of a springer to dance a little more than a standard rest.

Funny you should mention that.  Not to get too detailed about my shooting bench, but the arrangement I had for testing this idea was pretty basic.  I had the pad sitting on a cardboard box on my bench.  I noticed it was slipping around a bit, so I duct taped it to the box to stop it sliding around.  The groups instantly opened up on me.  Removed the tape, and nice and tight again.  Now the pad I have is pretty grippy on the rifle stock, but it was sliding on the box.  So by all means, set it up so things can move around a bit.  Later, people.

Quick follow-up, those groups have now shrunk to just over 1/4 in. at 20 yards.  Will do some longer range testing tonight.
