Whisper and Pellet evaluation
« on: March 16, 2008, 03:40:31 AM »
I had to cancel my $148.55 PA order due to continual backorders. Once one pellet would come in another I had ordered was out making a continous Backorder that went on for 2 and half weeks with my new shipping date now held up for the Rockets and Tomahawks until 3/28/08! In short I dropped the order, remade a small order skipping the pellets and bought them locally. Online Dick's had a nice assortment of pellets and FREE SHIPPING! But I went locally to Dick's where the assortment(surprise!) was MUCH smaller. I bought  500 pack of Crosman Premier Hunting pointed for general use, Beeman coated Hollow Points, Gamo Hunters and Gamo Rockets. The prices were good! 250 Hunters were $2.99, Crosman points were $3.99, Rockets were $4.99, and Beeman coated HP were $4.99.
Analysis:
1st the Rockets, very tight fit into the chamber, you have to 1st push the tip in which is tight, then again push the back half in creating a really tight fit and seal. In my Whisper these were dead accurate, as in hole in hole shot after shot off hand too. Next were the Beeman Hollow points, a really tight fit that had to be nearly forced into the barrel, when shot made a different sound from the Spring, like a little louder and deeper. Again shot nearly hole on hole. Next were the Gamo Hunters, very tight fit, had to be nearly forced into the barrel and pushed flush with my finger so the barrel would close. Very accurate a dime could cover my 5 shots at 10 yards. Lastly was the Crosman hunting points, these nearly fell into the barrel, very loose fit and accuracy suffered to the point of Suckdom. These pellets just Suck. The palm of my hand to cover the spread.

It seems the tighter the fit, the different the sound which is more bass like, the better the accuracy....
These were in the house 10yard shots, 50 pellets each, all off hand but steadied against the wall, with a loose hold.

I've had the same time with PA and pellets since Jan.  I've ordered a Big Cat and a Whisper from them since the 1st of the year and have found the two guns have very different barrels.  The Whisper's barrel is a good bit smaller than the Big Cat's.  Just about every pellet fits into the Whisper snugly.  The pellets that tend to be the losest will simply fall into the Big Cat.  I bought the Big Cat for the nieghbor's boy and have not had the time or good enough weather to see what it's capable of doing but the Whisper seems to be the more accurate so far.  The Whisper tends to average 10 - 5 shot groups of Crosman Premier HP in 0.4" at 30 feet.

I wanted Tomahawks and Crosman Premier HP and of course a pack of JSB Predators for the local vermin. I got all the acceptable one's Dicks had. It was a pleasant surprise to get Hunters and Rockets...

when you say you tried the crosman hunting points, do you mean the regular ones and not the premiers?

I used the regular ones in my crosman 2100 pump and they worked just fine, but that's a whole different rifle.

I haven't tried the regulars in my whisper yet, I hadn't really thought about doing it actually, I have two tins of premiers to go through anyway.

after those I'll probably try the predators.......if I can justify the cost at the time.

Mark, spend the extra money on the Predators to at least try them. My Whisper shoots them better than any other pellet. I am talking one ragged hole from 15 yards as long as I do my part. The Wolverines from Sportsmans Warehouse are right there with the Predators. From what I understand the Wolverines are JSB Exacts. Ten bucks will get you 500 of them Wolverines, and I haven't found a damaged pellet in the tin yet. :D

Ok I now shot a ton of the new pellets and have more to say. 1st the rocket pellets are dead accurate once the scope is dailed down, they shoot 2 inches high at 35 ft.  I bought a new Beeman pellet gun target trap and started testing my pellets. I was shooting at 50 ft from a table with the gun in a bipod. The Rockets do have all kinds of weird extra crap hanging all over them, (so far have not affected how they shoot, I tried clean ones and fully winged with extra flanges hanging on them, all shot the same), they have to be forcifully  mashed into the breech with a Beeman Pell tool and once the scope is dropped 15 clicks lower, the Rockets will shoot the eyes out of a snake and after 5 shots pierce the Beeman metal target trap. Word to the wise. I stuffed my trap with a Nerf football and can now use the trap indoors at 35 ft excluding use of Rockets. The Crosman Premier hunting point pellets drop into the breech like they are gonna drop out the barrel, but they don't, and they shoot hole on hole at 35 ft once the scope is raised up 15 clicks afte the Rockets. After taking them out of the trap and examining them, they stay together and have one mashed side as it hits the trap. The Gamo Hunters are a tight fit into the breech and shoot equal to the Crosman points, they also nearly disinigrate in the trap totally fragmenting into star cluster and pieces. The RWS superdomes shoot very well also, smash up similar to the Crosman points in the traps, and fit the breech snugly. The Beeman coated pointed hollow points fit loosely but not like th Crosman points, the Beeman drop in and stay, shoot nearly as good as the rest and completely smash flat in the trap like a mushroom. So go ahead and shoot them pointed hunting Crosman, they are cool.
