"New" rifle on the way!
« on: March 21, 2008, 01:05:53 PM »
Stumbled into an unexpected deal.  Someone on the Yellow with a Talon SS on CO2 was looking to sell or trade, one of the guns he was interested in was a BAM B50.  Well, I had the B50 I got from Dano, but I've wanted a second Talon since I got mine, so I emailed to see if he was interested.  A deal was struck, the TSS is on it's way, and the 50 is going east (sorry, Dan).  This will be way cool, I'll be able to leave my hammer setup (Blodnob valve, 24" .22 barrel), but still have a quiet, relatively low powered bird sniper available without having to swap barrels and tanks around.  Even better, I have an extra HPA tank, so will be able to do a fast power swap on either gun.  Who knows, maybe I'll finally order that .25 barrel, and see how high I can go :-)!

So, does anyone have any info on CO2 powered Talons?  I'm a little worried about running anything on CO2 in my neck of the woods, other than indoor use, I suspect I'm only going to have about a 3 month CO2 season.  I'm anticipating velocities in the 600-700 fps range, but LOTS of shots!  Is there anything I can do to boost that, or would I just be wasting gas?  Anything special I should be watching for, I have ZERO experience with CO2, I went from springers to PCP's.

Well, I'll keep everyone posted, gun should be here next Weds., probably won't have anything much to post 'til next weekend.  Later.

Dave

Sounds like a great deal . You are correct about running the Talons off CO2 . With the 12" barrel SS I got IIRC 675fps , with the 18" barrel around 750fps and a loud POP. LOL . I always preferred the 9OZ CO2 bottles , it gave me a little more cheek room and the length is the same on all the bottles. The only way to increase the performance is with longer barrels. The more I turned up the power wheel , I would see a white vapor trail spitting out the barrel and according to the chrony very little gain if any. kirby

I bet with a little work on the top hat you could make a .177 with a long barrel shoot in the 700's, and maybe even be pretty quiet?  Man, you guys are gonna make me buy another Talon........sheesh!

With a 24" barrel you could probably reach 800fps in .177 , but I don't know about the quiet factor. hehe. kirby

I was just thinking of adjusting the tophat to push less CO2, but still break 700, and maybe lower the sound a bit.  Maybe?

Might get a quieter 700fps with a 24" barrel with the power wheel turned all the way down. Should be pretty quiet with the longer barrel. kirby

Thanks, guys, I may do a little experimenting, but I'm probably going to leave this as a short barrel, set it up to be light, compact, and quiet.  Might even have to get a lighter, smaller scope for it, has anyone noticed any improvement in the Leapers Bug Buster?  Is there any difference between that and the Centerpoint version optically?  The one's I've seen were practically useless at anything over 10 or 15 yards, but I still like the idea.

David, did you see any difference in pellet preference between CO2 and HPA?  Both the Talons I've used are outstanding with Kodiaks or EJ's, and only fair with pretty much anything else.  But that's also at 900+ fps, I'm thinking that if the CO2 is under 700 fps, some different, lighter pellets will work better.  On the other hand, I've heard that the Crosman CO2 guns seem to prefer heavier pellets, even at reduced velocities.  Any input here would be much appreciated.  I still have a fair selection of .177 pellets on hand, but if there is something that stood out for you, I'd like to hear about it.  Thanks.

Dave

Dave; went and read some of my old posts over at rimfireshooting and it seems RWS superdomes were my pellet of choice and I also found where I was getting 580fps on CO2 on the lowest setting . kirby
