Last Crow
« on: March 29, 2008, 07:58:42 AM »
I could not help myself when I saw this crow land out in front of the house today. He just presented me a shot so I decided what the heck. He and a buddy landed out front to eat something. I estimated him at 30 yards(stepped off to 36) so I adjusted the new 4x16 Center Point to 30. I loaded my new favorite wolverine pellet into the barrel of my Whisper. Then found him in the scope. I have the gun shooting right on at 15 yards, my normal starling distance. So I decided I would hold just a little low. The crow was facing me when he went to peck something to eat. That was the perfect shot I placed the crosshairs on his head figuring if it shot a little high I would get a neck shot or possibly right through him. When I pulled the trigger I heard a solid thwack and the crow just dropped flat and quivered a wing and that was it. Pretty sure the pellet went right through him after entering around the neck. Lots of blood out of the nostril and mouth. I am thinking lung shot!!!! This will be the last crow I shoot. I dont do anything with them but feed the eagles. So 2 crows are it for me. Watch out yellow beaks!

Yesterday I shot a yellow beak. Sorry no pics. I went down and tossed him onto the beach for the food chain to do its work. After an hour we noticed an eagle come down and pick up something small and take off with it. An hour later though we saw a seagull with the starling. He had it half way down. After he soaked it in the water a couple of times. He finally managed to eat the whole starling. It was 5 solid minutes of good entertainment. My boys just loved it. I never thought a seagull would eat a whole starling. His neck looked like a snake after a large meal.

Barry, I am fortunate enough to live on the saltwater here in Puget Sound. I call the sound my backyard. My boys counted 11 eagles out on the tide flats last weekend. This time of the year there are no more salmon for them to eat in the rivers, so they come out here and chase the pintail, mallards, and buffalohead ducks. If it flies out here this time of year it could die. I actually saw an eagle take a Canadian goose last year. Too cool!

Stanley, do you have any of Bob's triggers on your girls? I see you have three or four Gamos. If not, it will turn all of your gamos into different guns. Simply the best 32 bucks I have spent. I am shooting dime sized groups from 15 yards with it. Before the trigger I was lucky to keep all the pellets inside two inches. Just seems to keep getting better. I don't know if it is me with practice or the barrel is getting seasoned? I only have one real pellet gun. Little jealous of all the gals in your stables. :0

Hey Crazy, is that a center point 4-16 x 40 you have there?  If so, how do you like it?  Stay zero'ed well?  Thanks...

Right on Scott. It is one of those Walmart specials. I liked it so much I went and bought a second that is just sitting in the gun case waiting for a home. I think the optics are every bit as good as the bushy banner that I had bought for it. So far she seem to be keeping zero even with the gamo one piece mount. I like the reticule in the Centerpoint better than the Banner. Now I have four scopes and one gun. Actually thinking about selling the Banner on the classifieds for some airgun money. A Talon SS would look pretty cool with three scope hanging on it. HEHE

Thanks Ed, nice to have you back. I actually shot 2 starlings yesterday, but didn't take any photos. I toss them out on the beach to see what comes to take them. We have a seagull that has acquired a taste for starling. He picks them up takes them to the water gives them a good dunking, and the swallows them whole. He actually ate both of them yesterday! One of his buddies sat, watched, and mimicked every move he made. Now there might be two seagulls to feed starlings to?

It's amazing what a seagull will eat isn't it?? I never saw them swallow a whole bird but I'd like to :) but then again if they can swallow a whole fish why not a bird :)
