whisper accuracy, what am I doing wrong here?
« on: March 29, 2008, 11:12:06 AM »
okay, I have a gamo whisper and I have removed the scope riser, just to lower the scope to a decent height. I am not using the gamo scope, since I could never get it in focus. I am using a crosman scope, 4x32. I am using the gamo one piece mount that came with it and it doesn't clamp correctly (flush) but it seems to be holding, and I have removed the shim from the back ring.

I can make dime size groups at ten yards with predators (I just got them) and CPHP easy. when I go to shoot at a longer distance, say 20-25 yards, the shots are a foot higher, completely missing everything by a mile.

I can take it back in the house and its still right on at 10 yards.

now when I had the exact same scope on my crosman pump (2100 classic) the distance difference didn't matter and it would still nail everything right on.

what am I doing wrong here? am I missing something?

Hey Mark,

This is an easy problem to fix.  Your angle of impact and angle of sight are two completely different lines.  Try sighting in at 30 yards and you'll find you're going to be closer to the 10 and 20 yard centers than you are the other way.  There are a few sites, if you do a  search for scope sighting, that will get into the line of sight and point of impact in further explanation.

http://www.arld1.com   is a good start for the blow by blow info you seek.  Dont fret... I'm certain the gun is not the culprit.  If you need more help drop me  a note and I'll try to help with the specifics.

thank you jack, I was hoping that was all it was. I am just frustrated that I didn't have this trouble on my cheap crosman.

Hey Mark,

Dont get down... It can be a frustrating endevour.  I took about 2 months to get my 308 bench rest rifle sighted in where I needed it to be for match... and long range deer, and javelina shooting.  It is a long arduous process to make a round stack against the one in front of it.  with patients and time you'll get it where you want it.  the biggest trick is to make sure your eye relief is correct.  too close the target will wander in the optic... too far away the target will ander also.  its fitting the scope in the rings and having it loose enough to move it back and forth but tight enough to have friction on it so it stays in place while finding the sweet spot.  Lets start here.  on the gamos there is a stop in the rear ring that needs to be tightened before you mount the scope; ensure you use blue loctite on it.  This prevents the optic from precessing rearward after a shot... and yes it will with our springers.  when the rings are fastened in place then place the scope in rings and fix a place where your natural mount is.  This is best accomplished by closing your eyes and mounting the gun.  do this five times and you'll get your nature mount. KEEP your head still and the move your optic till you see just the sight picture and a little interior of the optic  I mean just  alittle.  from there tighten it up.  take it to your range and sight it in at a good distance 30...40 yards.  while doing this at distance fix your fine focus on the eye piece.  you should be able to see both the target and the crosshairs with out changing much EYE focus.(not scope focus)  Like I mentioned before have patients and you'll get what you need.  This will not be dead on in close but it should be accurate enough to take those pesky tree rats or ground rodents.  after a while youll know how much elevation change you need for certain distances and it will become second nature.

Keep me posted and I hope this helps,

J

I just got back from the range, and I have it sighted in at 50 ft (that was the longest indoor thing they had, everything else was for clay pigeons). I was allowed in the pistol range to shoot.

I didn't have to move/adjust it at all actually. it was less than a quarter size at 50 ft (approx 16.5 yards) just standing and freehanding it.

I hope to find another local range that has a bench rest with some longer distances.

thanks for taking some time to answer my questions.

I found part of the problem.....

......was how the rifle was being supported when shot. when I rested the muzzle on something when shooting (way towards the end of the barrel), the shots went haywire. I am thinking there was a ton of bounce when it was fired when it was sitting on something hard- that would deflect the barrel.

When I shot while standing, "freehanded" as my family says, I got everything right on.

I am going to try it some more to see if that was the whole problem.

Yep, that could be the problem.  When I shoot my air rifles....I still move my forward hand to different spots on the stock to get that "perfect" feel and shot.  Resting the barrel on something or even holding the stock at a different spot will/might affect the POI.  Some guns are just more "Hold sensitive"....as I've learnt from GTA.

Just in front of the trigger guard seems to be the sweet spot on my Whisper. Either resting it on my hand, or lighty gripping with my hand.
Good luck.

missed two more shots today, going freehanded. getting frustrated again!

when I went to the range a week ago, standing, I could make a quarter at 50 ft freehand easily with CPHP. crouching down a bit at the house I can't hit a barn using the same grip.

I am going to try some experimenting tomorrow.

Let me know how you figure it out, as today I have the same problem. I can shoot dime size groups indoors with my pet pellet, but when i set my trap outside an extra 15 or so feet, i was so high off that it took 120 clicks down(to the last possible click before it locks up) and 40 clicks left, this put me on paper and consistently 2 inches high with no more scope adjustment left. Several other pellets impacted all within 2 inches...back in the house it was 6 inches low.
