CFX And Barrel Droop??
« on: March 30, 2008, 04:00:25 PM »
Has anybody ran across a Gamo CFX with barrel droop?  Not sure yet if my new CFX is plagued with it or if my new Bushnell totally bit the dust but something went wrong.  It was shooting around 1/2" low at 10 yards and something similar at 20 yards.  At 30 yards I was in the process of dialing her up and was getting real close when it just started shooting a few inches low.  My scope was dialed up as far as it could go at that time so there's nothing left to do.  I'll wait for my one piece mounts to arrive this week and start over.

If the gun had droop it would have been there the whole time. Sounds to me like a scope problem, as droop wouldn't just appear or get worse. Do you have a different scope to try out? If that scope sights in (and holds it zero), then I would suspect the Bushnell is damaged. If you have access to a chrono, you might check the numbers. That would tell you of a velocity loss (which if great enough) could change your POI.

I do have a chrono and had been using it during the day when things went wrong.  Although I did not go back and see if maybe the gas ram had sprung a leak or maybe even one of the seals in the gun had blown.  The thought did cross my mind but I have yet to find time to test that.  I really think it's a scope issue but droop may be in the equation too since I could not adjust the scope up anymore.  I'll give the Centerpoint scope a try and see if it can be zeroed at 30+ yards.

Maybe I am displaying my naivete here, but I don't see how a CFX could develop barrel 'droop', unless somehow it was smacked against a tree hard enough to bend the fixed barrel...

Let's say the term barrel droop is used losely for any gun whose barrel is not parallel to the action & where the barrel slopes toward the ground.  I'm pretty certain I've read where the RWS Diana fixed barrel guns, such as my RWS 48, often suffer from barrel droop.  The mounts on my RWS are such that allow the back section of the mount to be rasied and lowered, thus combating the effects of barrel droop.

what size caliber is your cfx? did you recently change brand or style of pellets?

It's a .177 with a gas ram that just arrived last week.  I haven't had time to change anything except the location it used to live.   :D

try another brand of pellets. see if the dropping point changes. leave your scope adjustments the way you have it for the moment. if the new batch of pellets still drops then it could be the gas ram or compression seal.

try shooting it with just open sights, since the sights are set up differently from a break barrel. the cfx's rear sight is on the breech not on the barrel. so if its a droop then it should be very noticeable when shooting at a certain distant. if it shoots straight then try a different scope.

i (personally) think its the scope. i've been through two of those walmart 4-12x40 centerpoints. they are junk. the adjustment knobs locking system doesn't keep the points true. the knobs hold down screw always become loose and when you tighten or loosen the lock rings, it moves your adjustments a few clicks from the prefered setting back or forwards.
