Gamo ring creep on Hunter 440
« on: April 01, 2008, 11:38:13 AM »
On Valentine's day I ordered a 440 refurb from Cabelas, after receiving it, I ordered a "stock" BSA AR4X32 from Natchez and GRT III trigger from Bob.  My goal was to put an accurate package together for less than $200.  I installed trigger without a hiccup then mounted A.O. scope using BSA rings and Gamo's scope stop.  I degreased thoroughly and locked bases on rail p.d. tight, then installed scope, leveled and snugged down rings p.d. snug.  After first 250 shots I was seeing zero-shift daily, sometimes sooner, and scope had moved enough that a corner of Gamo "friction" pad in rear ring was clearly visible.
I removed scope, removed pads and adhesive backing from upper ring-halves, then lapped-in scope bases to assure proper alignment, reinstalled scope, leveled and snugged down rings p.d. snug(er).  This solved problem for 1-2 days then zero shift began again. I rechecked screws and rechecked again, every screw was tight but now Gamo scope-stop looked like someone drove a wedge under it from fore to aft: vertical stop-screw sits at 45-degree angle in plastic center block, orange "bumper" is distorted upward. Clearly ring base(s) is shifting now, not scope moving in rings.  Time to regroup and research!
I spent untold (retirement) hours researching on web but all I saw is guys saying you need rings with 2-screw bases or one-piece mounts with 4-screw bases.  I'm thinking to myself: Gamo designed this package so why should I have to replace components?
Last weekend, finally, I put a single drop of Loc-Tite super-glue on each scope-ring base where it clamps the mounting rail, and let dry for six hours.  The Gamo scope-stop was wrecked so I did not reinstall.  This "enhancement" appears to have stopped mount creep on mounting rail, for now anyway, and rifle has now held it's zero for four consecutive days of 100+ shots daily.
I'm not too pleased with my handiwork but at least I now blame flyers on my holding and not on scope hardware or Charlie's good GRT III trigger.
Oh by the way:  can't say that I'm too pleased with up-down, left-right repeatability on this little scope but at $25 plus shipping I can't complain too much.  I chose to install it instead of included BSA AR 3-12X50 for:  low height and less recoil mass; hoping to avoid the very problem I had to deal with anyway.
I apologize for such a lengthy first post by a newbie, any comments or suggestions will be greatlly appreciated by your truly.

Do yourself a favor and order a one piece accushot scope mount. If you install it properly you will never have scope or mount creep again. All the hunter actions can be very harsh on recoil and you will find that most of us who have one the Gamo Hunters or Shadows use a accushot one piece mount. Peak and Jeff are the experts on this subject and maybe they will chime in.

Welcome to the GTA Forums Curtis,

The Gamo 440 Hunter is a fine air rifle, but the rings are far from the best out there.

If I were you, I would invest in a Leapers Accushot mount, yes they have two screws on each ring holding the scope, and two screws holding each mount to the rail. The one piece are stronger, and will hold your scope more securely due to the longer and strongerbase. These are not expensive mounts, just $8.49 for the two mount set, and $13.49 for the one piece mount.

You can get them for this price at : http://www.impactairgun.com/AccuShot__C174.cfm

Now I am not sure that this is the best price, but is a very good price.

I look forward to your future posts !

Welcome to the forum Curtis..... Nice to have you with us....

As for the mount,,,,, just like Gene said,,,,, get yourself a one piece accushot mount. Take the mount apart and clean and degrease all surfaces, including and especially the locking shoe surfaces and the mount screws with denatured alcohol. after that clean and degrease the dovetail grooves and receiver top. Forget about that GAMO scope stop,,, it's worthless.... and you won't need it or any other scope stop...

Install the mount on the receiver using a drop of blue loctite on the screws and a dab in the dovetail groove. Let everything dry and cure for at least 24 hours. Your scope creep problems will a thing of the past :)

Let us know how you make out and once again,,,, welcome aboard....

Curtis,

First, welcome to the GTA. These folks are the best!

I had the EXACT same problem you are having with my S1K and my BSA 4x32 scope. No matter what I did, the scope would creep. In fact, it would creep so badly that the Gamo-supplied scope stop once flew past my right ear. It was clearly time to take action. I did as Jeff recommended and thoroughly cleaned the dovetail, scope rings and hardware with denatured alcohol and applied a drop of blue loctite to the hardware and in the groove on the dovetail. After letting it cure overnight, I have had ZERO problems with this particular rifle. Now, on my son's CFX, no matter what we tried, I could not get the scope to remain positioned. It would creep without fail. I resorted to more drastic means and installed the Accushot one-piece mount and it has been perfect ever since. When I bought my Hunter 440, I didn't hesitate. I ordered CDT's trigger, the scope and the Accushot mount all on the same day. These things lock down the scope properly and you will not be dissatisfied.

Here is a pic of the mount and the scope on my rifle so you can get an idea of what the setup looks like. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg181/NMCA_Ron/DSC01538.jpg

Thanks for excellent advice about Accushot one-piece mount performance, sounds like it may be best way to go.  Actually, I have an unopened high-profile Accushot 1-piece mount that was ordered before deciding not to mount 3-12X50 on rifle.  I'm really not keen on high-mount scopes especially when shooting rifles offhand.

I just now ordered a Bushnell 3-12X40 Sportsman from Natchez for $40 (it's seems a bargain since Wal-Mart sells for $70 here) plan to sell BSA 50mm, H.Rings, H.Mount to offset cost.  Sure wish I'd known about Impact Air Gun earlier, Accushot mount price is definitely lower.

J.P. Shelton praises this 40mm scope in his Upland Hunter articles and I need a little more magnification for wary-wily neighborhood crows.  (I keep reading how Eastern crow population has declined, personally I think they just relocated out West to Southern California ...)

Can someone confirm whether Sportsman 40mm A.O. is okay with standard-height mount on a 440?  If so I'll order the correct mount.
