Welcome to the GTA Forums Gil,

He is a link to air gun cleaning: http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2006/01/cleaning-airgun-barrels-stuff-you-need.html

All three of your Gamo selections are fine rifles, with the CFX being the most accurate by a hair, they all have the same power plant, and the Whisper is 1.32 lbs. lighter :)

The Big Cat is a fine rifle in the same power range of your three other selections, so choose the rifle that you like best !

I hope to see your posts in the near future, along with the rifle that you selected and your opinion if her !

Bill

P.S. Or, you could always buy all three ???

Well, now im thinking i might get the whisper instead. I will be shooting in my backyard as well as in the desert. I also dont want the police breathing down my neck.

I also saw a video on the youtube and some guy had a whisper. He was hitting a piece of metal about the size of a NO PARKING sign from 100 yards.
And just so that i am positve about this: Zeroing a scope. For instance: say my rifle was shooting too low. I would adjust the elevation dial down toward were the pellet hit right?
because thats were the barrel is pointing and were the scope should be pointing.

Ive been trying to zero my scope perfectly for a while now and i keep messing it up.

I think that all Gamo rifle barrels are probably of comparable quality (that is, pretty good!). The fixed barrel and greater weight of the CFX does seem to translate into more accuracy for most shooters, although not by much.

The down side of the CFX is the awkward and slower loading. Some would say that it makes plinking less fun... but it's up to you.

BTW - the old Gamo 440 is still available at Natchez for $100... it's "old fashioned" with a solid steel barrel and wood stock, but it is still "the deal" among Gamo breakbarrels... the basic mechanicals haven't really changed with the newer models.

Personally, I don't think cleaning pellets are a good thing. It's almost like dry firing the gun and that of course  can cause spring damage.  :0  You are far better off just making a pull through. It's easy and does a far better job too.  (I like em tho cuz they bring me bizness... 8)  8)

Of the three Gamos you mentioned...I think the CFX would be the most accurate since it's a fixed barrel....I don't own one so I really don't know.  But alot of members here swear by that gun....as someone mentioned before...it's abit more time consuming to load.

I have a Viper, Whisper and like you a Big Cat also.  Of these three I would rate the Viper as the most accurate....although a bit "twangy" sounding due to the hollow stock...some owners stuff insulation into the stock to quiet it down.

I'm not a good shooter and yesterday I brought my Viper outside for the first time....I put 16 out of 20 shots into a 2 1/2" X 4" cardboard at 40 meters.  My hold is not steady....although I was kneeling and one elbow was on one knee....and the dot in the scope was weaving all over the place and I still managed to hit the mark.

The Whisper is very accurate also (Although I haven't shot it past 20 meters) and quiet....

The Big Cat is the lightest...maybe that's why there tends to be abit of barrel movement...but I can live with that....haven't shot it past 30 meters.  At that distance...my groups were about 2" shooting freehand...my fault and I need to experiment with different pellets.

Hope this helps you narrow down your choice.....or like someone said, buy all three!!!

Hi
Im so glad I was reading this thread, I am in the same position I have a threat called the best gamo rifle for hunting, should I say misscalled. Actually Im looking for any type of good accurate power rifle but thought firts of Gamo rifles because of their price and quality. Now I believe that you been an experience shooter and also somebody that has been modifying customizing or tunnig  air rifles you will be the best person to ask a few questions about what rifle and in what caliber should I get.
I have already made lots of research read every rifle comments even asked the airgun reporter from pyramidair. and now My rifle decition has narrowed a lot but still caliber is an issue as well as wich gun to pick as I am going to use it primarily for hunting. I want a RIfle with accuracy! great accuracy, and od course some power for range!
I have a few quetions Between the whisper and the CFX both turbo tuned wich turns out best?
If Im picking a .22 cal for hunting I need one that can deliver a killer impact at 50 meters wich .22 rifle can do this?..
What do you think about the Benjamin sherinda Super Streak? Ive been told is not  very accurate, others say its a great rifle. what are your comments towards this gun?
Would it be better a whisper or CFX turbo tuned or a more expensive RWS as a 460 or 48 stock? (because Im only willing to spend around 450 bucks top)
What other rifle would you recomend me? Im desperate I cant wait to have one!
I have some experience shooting real firearms and I had a crossman 2100 5 years ago but now I want a good air rifle.

thaks!

Pedro:

In the RWS line have you considered the RWS 46E? It is in your price range and tends to be more accurate than some rifles because it has a fixed barrel cocked with an under-lever. The cocking lever being located under the barrel adds a stabilizing weight out front which tends to make it less heartbeat sensitive which is good for off-hand shooting and hunting.

The RWS 46E also has a pop-up loading port which pops up for pellet loading when the rifle is cocked. You get the long term accuracy of a fixed barrel plus the convenience of a break-barrel.

One of the major airgun retailers has it on sale for approximately $350 (US).  Sorry, I can't remember the name of the retailer, but when I do, I am going to order one for myself.

I am new to this forum so I hope I am not stepping on any toes by jumping in with a reply, but there are several variables to your question.  The longest kill part throws a whole different slant on how is should be answered.  First, from a physics perspective, the longer actual barrell (not counting the pseudo brakes on some models), the higher the velocity which contributes somewhat to kills at longer ranges.  Also a fixed barrell, (as on the CFX) should be a little more accurate in the long run, although I doubt that most shooters would ever see the difference.  More important, is the choice of pellet, quality and power of the scope, and technique/skill of the shooter.  As a former competition shooter, it is my experience that a heavier rifle is preferable over a really light rifle.  I read that a quality tuneup by a good air gunsmith will make all this easier.  If you want to hunt and kill at longer ranges, I say get a .22 over a .177 then add a quality sighting system, and practice/experiment until you can consistently put every shot where you want it at the range you will be experiencing in the field.

Again, I really appreciate the help.

Gil, they do not sell the Whisper .22 here in the states. I don't even know if they make them. I sent Gamo an email asking them if they ever would and they just tried to sell me one in .177 which I already own.  The videos you see on youtube are from a member on this forum I think his name is Snakeater98 or something close to that. If you find the Whisper in .22 please let me know. :emoticon:

Not really sure, some thought they might get stuck in the end of the dampener, but it does not, it did get some black junk off, which then I did a thorough cleaning, it also sounded like a gun going off when I shoot them, probably not good for the spring.....
