Scope rails on my Shadow 1000?
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:25:23 AM »
My Shadow's scope rails end a little over an inch before the plastic end cap begins.  So with the gamo scope stop that came with it the rear scope mount is about 2.5 inches from the beginning of the plastic end cap.  When I mounted my scope the closest I can get the end of the scope is just about 1/2 inch past the end of the plastic end cap.  I would like it a little closer to wards me so I dont need to scoot my face so close.  I tried removing the scope stop and we all know the results of that.  I have noticed in some of the pictures online that some have rails that go all the way to the plastic end cap.  Why are some different?  Is there anything I can do to fix it?  could you put the scope stop behind the front scope mount instead of the rear?

here is a photo of the way I wish mine was:
http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/zoomed_model.pl?model_id=243

here is a link of what mine is:
http://www.gamo-airguns.com/air-rifle-huntershadow1000.htm      click on the scopestop and it shows the close up

I bought mine at walmart and have heard people saying theres had no scope stop and rails all the way to the cap from there and implied this was a cheaper model but mine is just like the gamo web page.  I have only seen one other shadow in person and it was the silver supreme and it had the rails like mine.   thanks for any info, I am new to this and maybe I am missing something.  Michael

My Shadows dovetails grooves also stop about an inch before the plastic cap also, but it hasn't effected mounting my scope to my desired location.  You didn't mention what kind/type of scope mounts you are using, that info would help.  Yes, you can indeed put the scope stop behind the front scope mount, however I think you will find that that GAMO scope stop will simply not hold on the Shadow due to the fact that the receiver is not drilled out for the scope stop pin. Your wording implies you are using a 2 piece mount.  I tried several 2 piece mounts on my Shadow with poor results.  I finally ordered a BKL #260 one piece mount and my scope "creep" problems were solved, and this without having to use a scope stop in conjuction with the mount. Take a look at this site
http://bkltech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BKL&Category_Code=200 The Shadow has the reputation of being a difficult rifle to attach a mount to and not have it move.  Gene, forum owner, actually drilled his own indentation in the top of the receiver of his Shadow so that he could use the scope stop pin that come in most scope stops.  I think he had some good results, but you would have to check with him directly on that.  I didn't want to drill on my rifle so I simply ordered that BKL 260 mount (has incredible holding power) and my problem was solved.  Do a search on scoping a Shadow and you will find many posts offering advice.  Good luck and good shooting.

The scope I have is a Beeman 3-9x32.  Since I posted I looked at some of the other posts including a photo of your shadow and notice it was the same as mine.  It is not a huge problem and I see how the single mount worked on yours.  I am off to the Sportsmans Wharehouse to see if they have anything but I doubt it.  Thanks for the info

Good Call Longislandhunter

If I had known about those BKL mounts I would of never drilled into my S1K.

Glad you have tried the BKL mount, because the 253 and 254 models work fantastic for all my springers. I even put a 253 on my S1K and it has not moved yet...:) I dont use a set screw or stop either..

i just got back from Sportsmens Wharehouse thinking I would not find anything.  They sell mainly low end air guns with 2 or 3 nicer Beeman and RWS guns.  I looked at their wall of mounts and did not see anything, when some one finally asked me if I needed any help he said I was out of luck on any 1 peice mounts.  Luckily for me a co-worker over heard our conversation and pulled out a RWS 1 peice "c" mount($45.99) as they caled it and  a Beeman HOP26c Scope mount #5036 ($55.99).  The RWS was about an inch shorter than the Beeman mount and had a real low profile.  The Beeman one looked much sturdier and had a much higher profile.  I decided to bite the bullet and shell out the 55 bucks on the Beeman mount.  When I got to the counter they could not find the SKU#.  I told them it was $55 but when they called in the back and got the number it only rang up for $29.99.  Yippy Ka yeh!!!  I am mounting it right now and will have pictures in a bit.  Thanks for all your help guys, it is nice to be part of such a nice community - Michael

So here is the million dollar question, when I put the mount on and tigten it and you are looking down the barrel, the mount leans to the left, which is fine because I am right handed so it makes it an 1/16 of an inch closer to my face.  Is this going to mess up how accurate it is, or is sighting in going to fix that?

When your scope was mounted on the rifle with your previous mounts did it "lean" to the left then also?  Reason I ask is to determine if the problem lies with the new mount or with the grooved dovetails that are cut into your receiver.  Ideally the scope should line up directly centered on the receiver top, but of course we don't live in a perfect world and sometimes when they cut those dovetail grooves into the receiver they do so a little off center.  Or,,, it's possible the dovetail grooves are centered and straight but the new mount is a little "off".  I have one GAMO rifle that has a raised scope rail and the rail is just a little, very little, off center which makes my scope angle ever so slightly to the right.  I'ts such a little bit of an angle you have to look close to even notice it, but my scope setup works fantastic so I really don't care.  Is your scope leaning a tiny little bit, or is  it really noticeable?  Are you sure you have the one piece mount properly installed and the mount base properly placed into the dovetail grooves on both sides?  It can be easy to overlook not having the mount base properly aligned inside the grooves.  I am by no means any kind of expert when it comes to anything airgun related, so I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable guys on the forum may be able to advise you better, but what I've mentioned are just some things that came to my mind.  Also, another topic but,,,,, make sure you thoroughly clean the dovetail grooves, receiver top, and scope mount elements with denatured alcohol to properly clean them before you permanently mount your scope.  And use blue loc-tite on the screws.

I have one of the b-square AA mounts on my S1k.

It seems to be hitting in the middle, and the grips can't both grip completely into the set of grooves... one is in fully, and the other is barely holding

I was thinking that I might grind a 16th of an inch of an arch off the bottom of the mount to let it fit all the way down.

Is there anyone with some experience with this, and might be able to suggest a better solution?

I did every thing suggested and it barely leans, maybe a 1/32 of an inch at the most.  The only thing holding it back is the top end of the arc that fits into the mount.  If I  barley planed it and it should be exact but it is more than fine for now.  After staring at it for amore than a hour it is hard to tell if it is off or your eyes have gone fuzzy.  All in all I am probally being to anal but I don't need any other exscuses than my self when I miss a shot, lol.  Other than that it is so much more solid than the mounts I had on there before and it took care of the scope being closer to be.  The real test will be tommorrow when I meet my friend for our Friday afternoon get together.  Thanks again for all the advice - Michael

Like I said in my earlier post,,, I have one rifle where the scope is just a hair "off" center but it doesn't bother me because it's such a small amount that it isn't obvious and the scope/mount combo on that gun work fantastic for me so I just left it alone.  Shoot it with your friend, see how it performs,,, if it meets your expectations and you are satisfied with it I'd say leave it.  Hope it works out for ya.........

Hello,

The foot on that mount is made to work turned the way it is or turned over completely. It is made that way to fit grooves or rails that are made a little wider or a little narrower. You may want to try it the other way before you tighten it down and mount your scope. Best of luck...
