Removing Shadow 1000 front sight
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:25:44 AM »
I have a Shadow 1000 that looks like the crown is a bit off.  I would like to at least remove the front sight and inspect more closely, and possibly recrown the barrel if it looks terribly bad up close.  How do you get the front sight off?  I don't see any set screws.  Is the thing glued on?

The front sight looks similar to the one in the picture at the URL below, except mine has a cage around the sight post.

Thanks.

That is easy haertig. Just heat up the sight with a hair dryer and it should come off. Take a piece of wood or something soft and wack it gently a couple times from the rear of sight, forward and it will just pop off..:) Gene

Thanks!  We'll give that a shot.  Sounds simple enough for even ME to accomplish.

And to get the sight back ON in a secure manner, do I just reverse the process or will some type of glue be required?  I might just leave the sight off if the barrel is not scarred up underneath it and go totally with a scope.  Right now I have a scope mounted and the open sights are still there.  I haven't decided which I want to keep on this rifle longterm.

The end of bore or barrel is knurled and I do not think you will want to leave the sight off..:) Just make sure when you put it back on you align the sight back where it was. That is easy to double check by holding rifle up and sighting it in. If it is just off one knotch you will know..:) No Glue required.

funny, i didn't think of the hair drier thing. i pinched it between a vise and chewed it off. ordered another one and put it on cockeyed and chewed it off again with the same vise. third time got lucky and was straight. guess i shoud've asked somebody here first.

A Crosman Quest FO front sight fits the Gamo barrel - and frankly it is a stronger sight.
