Tuneup or Air Spring? That is my question
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:46:38 AM »
I am a new member of this forum.  I have just purchased a Gamo CFX that I am working on getting to know.  My first epiphamy has been that the trigger on this otherwise nice piece of engineering really sucks!  I am a former competion shooter and I find this extremely annoying.  I have read in this forum that this the way it is with Gamo triggers - that it may (over time) improve from really terrible to just terrible.  So, I sent my $32 to charliedatuna and am now waiting on my replacement trigger to arrive by snail mail.

My next step is to decide if i want to get a super tune with a better spring or if I want to go the air spring route.  I have read a lot of posts on this forum on this topic and it is not clear to me which way to go.  I like the idea of an air spring, but I am not sure if the technology is quite there yet.  Could some of you more experienced folks give me the benefit of your thoughts on this topic?

Welcome Ron. I have a turbo-tuned CFX with the GRT trigger. If I were you, I would stick with the stock spring for now. Once you get the gold trigger installed, your shooting pleasure will increase ten-fold. I do believe that having a tune and lube job done will also increase your shooting pleasure as well. It has for me. Hardley any "twang" and smoother cocking= a great shooter that will last longer than the stock set-up.

Those air springs are a fairly new technology that needs some more tweaking. Straight springers have evolved greatly and with a great tune and lube, I believe will out-perform an air springer. Just my 2c 8)

Ron,
I have had my CFX for about 2 weeks now.  You are right, the stock trigger, putting it mildly, really sux.  Like nyairman say's, stick with the stock spring for now, and get your trigger in, that will make a WORLD of difference.  I think you will reallly like your new rifle.  What I figure, on mine anyways, shoot with the stock spring untill it needs a new one, and then get the tune done then.  Even with just the trigger, it seems like a different gun.  Enjoy and welcom to the forum.

Mixed emotions here for me.  1st off you will love the GRTIII trigger and I'm sure Bob will have you one in short order.  It alone will increase your shooting enjoyment 100 fold.  In the last few months I have purchased 3 Gamo guns, two springers and one gas ram type.  I did a home lube job on both of the springers and it helped each tremendously, so I'd imagine allowing CDT to do a real tune would improve the firing and such on your gun making it probably more of what you expected.  Now for the gas ram.  This is where I'm going to say... hum.... I love mine!!??  I purchased a Gamo CFX with the gas ram a few weeks ago and immediately noticed it was much more than the springers using the same power plant the CFX would have had if I had chosen the conventional spring powered gun instead.  I can actually see the pellet hit it's mark most of the time with the gas ram since the gun doesn't do acrobats near as bad as the springers do.  Although I am a bit disappointed in the power I gave up for the smoother power plant.  Both of the springers shoot in the mid to high 900fps ranger but the gas ram version is just barely breaking the 800fps mark.  Now these gas rams may be a crap shoot.  Watch the Whisper test video over at pyramidair.com and you'll see him put the springer against the gas ram version and the gas ram is more powerful.

Long story short.... being an ex-competition shooter, I think you'll like the smoother and faster firing cycle of the gas ram.  However you might pay a price in power.  I'm almost to the mind of thinking if you want real power and for it to be real smooth, it's time to cross over to the dark side and get a precharched pneumatic gun.
