Need hunting pellet advice.....
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:05:11 AM »
I've got my home tuned custom stocked Discovery shooting better with a barrel change and crown polishing and I'm thinking of hanging on to her for my squirrel rifle . All bench testing was done at 18 yards off a single front bag . It's shooting JSB 8.4g pretty good , ragged holes and I'm getting 30-32 shots at 855-890fps. I tried some Kodiaks and they were not quite as good but still a ragged hole most of the time and shooting about 800 fps for 15fpe . Then I tried some JSB Predators and they zipped through the chrony at 900-915fps for a 15.1fpe .And the best part is, when I didn't mess up and pull one off , they would go into the same hole . OK , those of you that have used these pellets for hunting ; should I stock up on the Predators? Or Kodiaks ? Does the few grains of extra weight make a difference? Or should I just hunt with the JSB Exacts 8.4g? Oh yea , and The rifle shoots superdomes into a group about the size of the Kodiaks , probably a .40 caliber ragged hole. kirby

Sound's to me that if your doing your part the Predator's are finding the kill zone everytime and the fps. seem's good also. Just my Predators worth but I've had great success with them in all my .177 and .22 shooter's. Some of our other great member's will jump in and get you some more good info.:) Ed

I totally agree with Ed,,,, if the Predators shoot well in your rifle then that's the pellet to use for small game. Like Ed I use them in both .177 and .22 and they perform outstanding on game, especially thick skinned game like squirrels. Stock up :)

That's what I was thinking , but I wanted to check with you guys. I've read where some people swear by them and others say they are a gimmick and you're just as well off using regular domed pellets . I'd prefer using something that would hammer them . kirby

Not a gimmick. When I shot them into my silent trap. They penetrate deeper and expand more than any other pellet. Very accurate to boot. Now take them beauties of yours and punch some holes in some game, not paper. HEHEHE

You also need to find out which pellet will group best at 40-50 yards.
What works at 18 yards may not work so well further out.
For that reason I usually carry 2 different kinds of pellets when out in the field.
.22 Discovery 4x16x40 Centerpoint
.22 Beeman SS1000 4x16x56 Centerpoint
.22 2250XT 6x32 Centerpoint
.22 Custom 2240 Tasco Red-Dot w/bling

And various other pistols too

Heya Kirby, thought I'd throw in my own 2 cents...I use the Wolverines for hunting myself, they fly very straight at long yardages (50+)  I have taken p-dogs at that range with headshots and a lot of holdover, but still carry enoungh energy if headshot to kill...Give it a whirl next time you're out...
