Just purchased a gamo shadow 1000
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:19:43 PM »
This is my first Gamo gun but not my first pellet rifle. I purchased this gun at a pawn shop for 120 bucks with a scope and am just wondering if the gun was a deal for the money. I have to admit that the gun shoots perfictly after the grt111 trigger installed and a one peice scope mount. Buuut. Many pellets are very loose in the breach , I am use to using Beman pellets and Crosman premeirs. The premeirs are an ok fit but the Bemans are a very loose fit. I would not think that a breach could be damaged but maybey the breach is good for all pellets made that way from the factory at (many of the Gamo ) factories. Even those pesky crosman lead free pellets are not hard to place in the breach but in all my other guns they are a chore and have to be driven in. I am always insecure buying guns at pawn shops but I could not pass this up. This is my first Gamo gun so please enundate me with info.

Welcome to the forum....

It's not uncommon for some pellets to fit loosely into the breech. Each gun is different. Try some different pellets,,, I'm sure you will be able to find the right pellet for the gun,, it just takes some experimenting,,,, which is half the fun  8)

Keep us up to date on your progress.....

I have several Gamo's and like Jeff said it is not uncommon for some pellets to fit looser than others. I have good luck with RWS Superdomes in my S1K's  (Shadow 1000's).

Good Luck

Welcome to the GTA Forums Wade,

You have found, A Great Place to BE !

Like you, it would half to be one heck of a deal, for me to buy a used gun. And she would half to be a very pretty shooter too.

I don't own a Shadow, but I do have the GREAT GRT-III trigger in my 890 Hunter, what a GREAT trigger !

Pellets come in different head and skirtdiameters, causing some to fit tighter than others. your best bet is to find the ones that shoot best in your air rifle.

Now that your a one of us, a member, and airgun addict, I hope to see you hear often !

What kind of scope?

What brand scope was on the gun?  Model?  Size/Magnification?  Who knows, you may have purchased an excellent scope and got a free gun to boot.

Bill your 890 is exactly the same action as the Shadow but the Gamo Hunter 890 has a beautiful beech wood stock on it..:)  A Shadow in disguise..:)

That is one that I do not have in my collection..:(

Welcome to the forum ,Wade. :)

I would suggest making a pull line out of weed trimmer line and pulling a few patches through, with goo-gone, followed by dry ones. Then get an assortment of pellets and start having fun. 8) Don't worry too much about not hitting the bull, just see which pellets group the best. Then you can adjust your scope for those. You should have the best luck with a domed pellet. HTH

Welcome to GTA Wade and it sound's like you scored a good shooter. :) I have the ShadowSport, same internals with a different coat on. Get yourself several selections of pellets and start running em through to see what she want's,she'll find some that pattern real nice for you. Good luck with your shooter and keep us posted on her performence. Ed

Jeebs, I just purchased a shadow myself, I went through a myriad of pellets before finding excellent shooters... Like others have said though, every gun is different.  I get my best grouping out of BSA Wolverines (sportsmans w.) and rws meisterkugeln's.  The superdomes are inconsistent in mine for some reason.  The BSA's are the same pellet as JSB exacts 8.4gr, and a VERY consistent pellet.  Excellent hunter as well if you plan on hunting with the round.

Welcome to the GTA Wade...I recently purchased two "Experienced" Shadows and they both shoot a little different.  They both have GRT III triggers and have been tuned by CharlirDa Tuna.  I'm in the process of figuring out what each one likes to eat.  So far they both like Crosman Copperhead Pointed 7.9 gr and Crosman Premier Hollow Point 7.9 gr.  I still have some RWS Superdome,  some Beeman Crow-Magnum and a tin of Gamo Match to try.  Keep shooting I'm sure you'll love your Gamo SK1.

Thanks for all of the great responses guys. I did get a swell deal. The scope was a tasco 3-9buy40 but it was not very good so I replaced it with a simmons 3-9buy50 and can take down a golf T at 35 feet no problem. The guys at the pawn shop must have hosed the gun down with wd40 besause it has taken me forever to clean and strip all of that crap out of the gun but other than that it has not a scratch on  it. And yes I have been trying alot of diferent lead and the beman and cps work the best just stay away from anything that wal-mart has to offer and I think the acuracy will be fine. I cant wate to go bag some tree rats and starlings this spring. Thanks guys and I am very glad to be here.

I  recently bought a Gamo Shadow 1000.  I have not shot it enough, nor am I a good enough shot myself to say anything about its accuracy or what pellets it likes.  I am very impressed with the apparent quality and feel of this rifle.

The Shadow 1000 has been discontinued (other non-1000 Shadow variants are still being made though).  You can still find the 1000 though.  Cabelas has it right now (new) for $139 including a 4x32 BSA scope and rings.  I bought mine refurbished from Cabelas, including the same scope/rings (scope was new), for $99.  Mine looks to be in perfect condition - not a mark on it.  Yours has a better scope so I'd say you got a good deal.  I can't really tell looking down the front sight mounting (it blocks a clear view of the muzzle), but I think my crown may be off just a little.  I plan to take off the sight, inspect, and recrown if needed.
