Sorting pellets by weight
« on: April 09, 2008, 01:21:28 PM »
I've been weighing some JSB Exacts 8.4g pellets and sorting them according to the lighter ones and the heavier ones. Today, I set up a makeshift bench and tried the different lots I've sorted , at 30 yards to see if it made a difference. I've added a picture of my bench and the target I used . the bench was my wobbly old card table with a folding chair , not the steadiest , but it worked OK. I'm sure I could shoot tighter groups with a stronger bench. The wind didn't help; as you can see some horizontal stringing in some of the groups. I tried to predict when the wind would blow, but several times it would catch me off guard . I shot 4 groups of 5 shots for each sampling of pellets . Top row : JSB unsorted , middle row : sorted by weight , the lighter ones, and on the next row: the sorted heavier ones. As you can see I think it makes a difference the groups on the bottom row are consistently tighter in spite of the wind. The lighter ones were tighter than the unsorted as well. Afterwards, I shot the same samplings through the chrony and then shot another 5 shot group of 5 shots with the heavier pellets at the third target from the right, bottom row , the wind had almost died by then and I shot the best group of the afternoon. The chrony results were just as conclusive with each sampling shot 10 shots each and the extreme spread calculated . For the unsorted , the ES was 24fps , for the lighter sorted 14.3fps , and for the heavier sorted , I had to drop one test pellet because it somehow shot out of the norm , it could have had a bad skirt . Throwing that one pellet out the heavier sorted also had an ES of 14fps, with the odd pellet it was 22fps. I had said I'd never get this involved as far as weighing my pellets , but I love an accurate rifle and to be accurate , you've got to have accurate ammo. And it gives me something to do while I watch TV. kirby

I always thought the guys that sorted pellets were probably the same guys who eat a sandwich and lick their fingers just after handling a bunch of lead......I always thought that.....now I know it:)

I bet it does make a significant difference at a distance, but again I am much too lazy for all of that.
