Looking at a lot of airguns recently, i found that apart from some great bargains other members have told me about, i am stuck between a GAMO hunter sport and a GAMO carbine sport,

the hunter seems to be the better of the two, i am primarily going to be plinking, but i may go hunting squirles and crows (my mortal enemy, lol) every once in a while.

anyone know the difference between these two?

Ii know the gamo carbine sport has only about 640fps and is geared more for kids. The hunter is probably a better choice. Do you know what kind of hunter it is?

There are really only a few different Gamo models when it comes to the breakbarrels. The ones advertised as "1000fps" in .177 are basically the same gun... the differences are sights, stocks, scopes, MuzzleBrakes, etc. Powerplant and trigger and pretty much identical.

Actually, just thought of another difference - I believe that at least some of the newer breakbarrels (i. e. Big Cat - not sure about the others) have plastic ears for the cocking link. A while ago a member mentioned that they broke on his gun. The older breakbarrels (and the 440 mentioned above) are all milled steel - much stronger.

The lesser Gamo's are similar in design but with shorter strokes, and (at least some) with weaker breech construction.

Don't know if you've considered it, but you might wanna take a look at the Cometa-built RWS 94. Cometa is another Spanish manufacturer, but they never got heavy into the gingerbread and gimmicks like Gamo did. The '94 is a good, solid rifle with a much better trigger, a larger powerplant, better firing cycle, and more power than the Gamo (despite what the rating say). I've got two - a .177 and a .22 - and frankly, they are definitely a notch above. The only down side is that it's slightly harder to cock and a little heavier. But a much nicer gun overall.

Oh, it is most certainly a Gamo. The 440 is an older model, it's basically the same as the old Shadow and 220 - except that it has a nice wood stock. It's the same model as the 890 (which some vendors still list) except that it has open sights and no muzzlebreak.

The 440 has very little plastic, the barrel and breech block are solid steel (no plastic jacketing). Like virtually all its cousins, however, it tends to suffer from a mediocre trigger and some twang during the firing cycle. But it can also be upgraded the same way as the related Gamo's - starting with DIY trigger upgrades, to DIY powerplant kits from guys like Rich in Mich and all the way up to  the full-tilt turbo tune that CDT does.

I believe the 440, when it was a current model, retailed for about $200. It's a shame - when Natchez runs out, that'll be the passing of one of the best deals out there.
