Oh, it is most certainly a Gamo. The 440 is an older model, it's basically the same as the old Shadow and 220 - except that it has a nice wood stock. It's the same model as the 890 (which some vendors still list) except that it has open sights and no muzzlebreak.
The 440 has very little plastic, the barrel and breech block are solid steel (no plastic jacketing). Like virtually all its cousins, however, it tends to suffer from a mediocre trigger and some twang during the firing cycle. But it can also be upgraded the same way as the related Gamo's - starting with DIY trigger upgrades, to DIY powerplant kits from guys like Rich in Mich and all the way up to the full-tilt turbo tune that CDT does.
I believe the 440, when it was a current model, retailed for about $200. It's a shame - when Natchez runs out, that'll be the passing of one of the best deals out there.
