What is a spring compressor and why do I need one?
« on: April 24, 2008, 08:43:31 AM »
I have seen some tutorials on how to build them, and I have heard that I should get one or build one, but why?

What does it do?

Is this in the "library"?  And where is the library?

Sorry for getting newb all over the forum =/

Rich, there are two reasons that you need a spring compressor. One is if you intend on doing your own tunes on your springers and second SAFETY..

If you want to take any springer apart, you need a compressor. It is used so that you can safely remove the main spring. Some springers have quite abit preload on the spring and you can be seriously injured, if your not careful. Personaly I would not take any springer apart without one, no matter how little the preload was.

If Pauls little experiment doesn't convince anyone, that a compressor is needed to remove the mainspring. Then they may deserve what they may get, sorry to say that, but I know a few people that have to be knocked in the head to get it.

And getting hit by the spring itself is not the only issue. Even if the spring only moves a little bit when it lets go, but contacts a smaller, lighter chunk of whatever, it can still transfer gobs of energy into the smaller piece (trading mass for velocity) and send it flying in an inconvenient direction with just as serious results. Even something as light as a grain of sand or splinter can do serious damage if it lands in the wrong place. Safety goggles are also a heckuva good idea.

Maybe a safety section in the library?  "READ ME FIRST!" with some graphic pictures of unfortunates.

Yes indeed... that works...lol... Walter has there the ultimate in spring compressors. Can you imagine shooting a springer that his spring compressor can't handle???

I can't even imagine COCKING a springer that his compressor couldn't handle.
