heres a spin off topic about spring compressors & safety
« on: April 24, 2008, 01:05:18 PM »
i did a test a few minutes ago and thought id share the results. im working on a gamo hunter for a fella
and wanted to see just what could happen when a spring goes wild.i replaced the hold pin with a screw
driver so i could pull it out and run.heres what happened.

as you can see that spring was moving FAST.the piece of wood i hit was like 10 feet away.

and the damage it did..if it was human flesh it be hospital time.

buying/making a compressor is a lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital.
SAFETY......SAFETY......SAFETY.

Safety first at GTA and fix gave a nice example of what danger's await just inside the action of a airgun. Ed

Thanks Paul.... excellent demo... and imagine that with a spring block or trigger block behind it nailing someone. Guaranteed hospital time..... andat theextreme, maybe the coroner's office for an autopsy appointment and death certificate.

Now you can see why I get so upset when people say they don't need or use a spring compressor. Even with a weak spring or a light weight gun, you can very easily put out eyes and teeth or more with just a little pressure from a steel spring flying around loose.

Gene knows just how pi$$ed I get about it and if it were up to me, I would ban anybody suggesting it or at least delete the post in it's entirety. He has also seen the dent in a cupboard door made by a spring that slipped and just missed him from about 8 feet away. I'm setting here getting fried just thinking of someone suggesting it.

If anybody is aware of the dangers or has been forewarned of danger andthe possibility ofinjuries caused and he still doesn't use a spring compressor, how or why should anybody feel sorry for him. I do feel sorry for someone that might do so not knowing any better it and something goes wrong. And it does happen.

But.... there are some out there that might follow the advice of some idiot that states he does it or anybody can do it or it's not hard (and then might state "I don't recommend it though" is a dangerous person to have around. It's like playing Russian Roulette. Play it long enough and you will lose. But by the same token you might just play it once and lose. But the ass that gave you the gun to play the game don't really care about you because he's can never lose as long as it's you playing the game. And remember... under the right conditions it can kill you or someone around you.

If one cared anything about the safety and health and had concern about the members and guests (or anybody else for that matter), they wouldn't or shouldn't even mention that they would remove a spring without a spring compressor. For everyone that reads those kind of comments and statements....please don't listen to those idiots that aren't standing in your shoes.

Gene and I are always concerned about safety and the safety of the membership and our guests..... and Paul.... you sure know where my hot buttons are.....lol... now I gotta go out and have a cigarette and it's all your fault.

read it again Paul... I revised it. And if it broke one of my guides, that's saying something cuz they just don't break. If ya don't mind and unless you are going to keep it as a "reminder". perhaps you could send it to me so I can examine it to see what happened. If not, thats OK. A couple of pics might do maybe.

I don't have a true spring compressor, and have never taken apart a gun, but I do have some toos used for automotive work that can/will serve as a compressor. I'm sure by the time I take apart any gun I'll have a real compressor though. Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea the spring comes out with that much power behind it. I knew it would be strong and hard hitting, never thought it would be anything like that though.

Even though my Baikal MP512 doesn't require a compressor do assemble/disassemble, I still use a bar clamp just to be safe. I won't even disassemble any of my other springers until I get my compressor built.
