Duct seal putty
« on: April 29, 2008, 07:23:59 AM »
Is an 8 inch round tin container 2.5 inches deep (ie, a cookie tin) filled with duct seal putty sufficient to stop a pellet from, say a .20 cal R9, or a .22 cal 2240 pistol, or would a reinforced backing still be needed?  it seems to me that this may be the perfect replacement "speaker" for the bookshelf speaker I intend to convert into a pellet trap.

Range, indoors, probably 3 - 5 yards max, with .177 B3 pistol or at most, .22 C 2240 CO2 pistol.
IF I shoot with a rifle, I doubt I will shoot indoors and IF put this in the old Polk Audio cabnet, I will not be using it outdoors as it will stay on my bookshelf.

Roger that, Trek.  I will find a deeper tin and buy another tub or two of the putty.  Putty is cheap, esp. compared to what the wife will take out of my hide if I should err on this.  I will go for 4 inches and test outdoors first.

Glue a thick piece of wood to the bottom of the tin.

That way, even were the duct putty to be penetrated, the board would a}stop the pellet & b} make enough noise to alert you ofthe problem . . .

Duct seal is unbelievable in its abitity to stop pellets. I have noticed in the last few days that penitration is much greater on 80 deg. days compared to common 40 deg temps of winter here. Density shure seems to change. However, it is still a great medium that is cheap & easily obtainable. My Diana 350 (177) @ over 1000 fps @ 80 deg. (7.9 gr. CPHP,s) penitrates less than 1". At 40 deg. temps if memory serves me right, less than 3/4". Since Tom Gaylord gave me advice on duct seal, I have been using the stuff for about 6 months. I have yet to find anything better! Alot of enterprising airgunners have come up with a few alternatives, some great ideas for shure,Im sticking with my tried & true. Now I try to make a post to my friends regarding this issue! Tim.

The brand new "fill" with duct putty is definitely very soft at temps in the mid 70's.  This stuff is water soluble so it will presumably "set" somewhat and firm up after it dries out a bit.  Until then, I smoothed it back out and stuck it in the fridge  to see if it would harden enough to shoot some more.  Wouldn't want to shoot through the top of the trap because I hadn't noticed the new putty sag into the lower end of the trap behind the target.

TEC, Im wondering if we are using the same putty. The stuff I use is totally impervious to water. My HVAC guy found some for me that was grey in color in "tubs", when he saw the black stuff Im using he said it was way denser. Just want to make shure ya got the right stuff! Tim.

Tim:
My stuff comes in half gal plastic tubs, is gray, and is definitely water soluble.  Bought it at Lowes and was told this was the only duct seal they knew of.  It is definitely gray in color and about the consistency of peanut butter.  It will stop a pellet in about 1" or less, but it definitely did not come in bricks and it definitely sags into the lower end of the trap after about 30 minutes of shooting or so.  I shot outdoors with it today for the first time.  I turned the trap over every few targets to keep it from getting too out of shape.  I suspect I may have a different variation of duct seal than the black stuff you describe.  This definitely came from where the air duct works were, not from the electrical section.  The containers already went out with the recycling this AM. They are a white plastic half gal bucket similar to what ice cream might be packaged in.

Hey Tom, when I went to Lowe's I found the same stuff and they said the same thing..:) I opted not to buy it because it was not dense enough. Would be nice to find the stuff that Tim is talking about.

Tim:
Are you saying the "black" putty is more dense than the gray(water soluble)  that comes in tubs?
If so, where did you get the black and what brand is it?
Thanks,

Mike

duct seal I got from Home Depot--one pound "pugs" grey putty solid blocks about 1 by 2 by 5 or six inches covered with a plastic wrapper. If this thread is still going on when I get home next week I will give you the manufacturers name.
