Gamo CFX noise
« on: May 04, 2008, 09:46:02 AM »
Hi all. I'm brand new to this forum and to Gamo guns.  I just bought a Gamo CFX after doing some research.  I read many reviews and people commented on the gun being fairly quiet.  It was also rated on pyramidair.com as being the same noise level as the Gamo Shadow.  Well, I borrowed my buddy's Gamo Shadow a couple weeks ago before getting my gun and I shot it in my backyard (residential area with many houses around).  His Shadow was pretty quiet and I didn't worry about the noise at all.  I shot my new CFX for the first time outside and WOW it was LOUD!!  It sounded like a .22 rifle!!  I ran inside quickly so nobody would see me with it outside.  I haven't had much of a chance to shoot it in the last couple days so I have only put about 20 pellets through it in my garage.  My question is this:  WILL THIS GUN EVER QUIET DOWN?!?!??!?  Is there any trick to making it quiet?  Will it be more quiet after the spring loosens up a bit?  If it goes to the same noise level as my buddies Shadow it will be fine.  Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it was dieseling. Do a search here on cleaning an air rifle barrel, it's a simple procedure, then clean the barrel really good. That should put an end to your noise problem :)

Basically what happens is if you have oil residue in the barrel the heat created in the barrel when the rifle is fired causes the oil to ignite and the result is the loud crack that you heard.

Just clean the barrel really good and you won't have any more dieseling problems. Use some "Goo-Gone" cleaner on a patch and pull it through the barrel starting from the breech end with a length of weed wacker line. then run come clean patches through until they come out clean.

Let us know how you make out and welcome to the forums.... Nice to have you with us..

I think longislandhunter answered your question pretty well, not much to add.

Hey newgamo man, don't shoot them shiney gold looking pellets that came with the gun. They are so light that they go supersonic and that will make a lot of noise.Shoot at least a7.5 gr. pellet or heavier to get the velocity below supersonic levels. All new guns have a lot of oil  that contributes to dieseling until  the gun is shot enough  to eliminate it.Don't worry it will settle down soon and you will no longer have to run inside after firing a shot.Welcome aboard.

Hey M,

Welcome to the GTA Forums, A GREAT PLACE TO BE !

Jeff has you covered on cleaning out the gunk and oil, And Dave covered the light pellet, super sonic boom !

They are the most common problems, on a noisy new Air Rifle..

Now that your a member of or airgun family, don't be a stranger. And Remember, there are no dumb questions here, just questions needed to be answered.

When I bought my CFX I wanted to handle and inspect it before buying so I asked the clerk if I could unbox it and look...No prob he says, well being saftey minded he wanted to check it so I told him how to cock it and rotate the chamber((not knowing you could half cock it or how bad dry firing was))...He does so, shines a borelite, all clear for me to handle. After a while of ohhs and ahhhs and several lookyloos admiring the rifle I decide I like it so he goes to box it back up...Hold on I say..."Ive read that keeping them cocked for long periods can harm the spring so could you dry fire it to release the spring"..Sure he say...points it at the roof...squeezes the trigger....POOOOOOOOWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!..

ALL AND I MEAN ALL OF GANDER MOUTAIN STOPPED...Managers came running, people left out the front, cashiers huddled with worried looks..im red faced,he's red faced...Oh Sugar Honey Ice Tea !!!!  No one outside of the people who had looked at the rifle belived it was a air rifle..Fun stuff...

Great story. Almost the same thing happened here at the new Cabelas in Lacy Washington. Shortly after opening they had a dry fire incident and the store immediately pulled all the air guns off the floor and put them behind the counter with the rest of the powder burners. I was back there a couple of weeks ago and see they regained there nerve and have them back out on the floor.

Wow, I really appreciate the quick replies!  That is a big relief to hear that after cleaning the barrel out I should be ok.  I did notice a burnt oil smell after shooting it.   I will try that out tomorrow and let you know the results.  Thanks!

Newgamo,
Yeah, like Progun said, DONT shoot the gold pellets thru it, the PBA's, they are too light of a pellet for the powerplant that you have.  I have a CFX and I really like mine, it is perty quite, and I guess the pellet of choice for it is the crosman Premiere Hollow point, very accurate and one heck of a tree rat killer.  You might try an assortment of pellets from 7.5 gr to 9gr and see what it likes the best.  Not trying to advertise for Bob or anything, but if you havent got the GRT III trigger in er yet, ooooh, you dont know what you are missing.  I think you will like your new addition.  Good luck and welcome aboard the GTA!!!!!!

...so I have only put about 20 pellets through it in my garage.
Wow, how big is your garage?  I'm afraid to shoot my Shadow in there.  That seems like an awfully small space for such a powerful air rifle.  I have a steel pellet trap but even with that I don't think I want to be shooting so close.  I shoot the 5 yards across my garage all the time with a much lower powered Crosman 1377 air pistol (using only three pumps).  I've never missed the pellet trap at that close range, but I did have one of my kids friends (teenager) take a shot and he totally missed the pellet trap and hit the plywood I had put behind it.  Even with only three pumps in that 1377, his miss ricocheted all the way back across the garage and hit me (we were wearing safety glasses of course!)  I would be really afraid of a 1000fps rifle in those close quarters.  I hope you have a good non-ricocheting backstop in there!
