Yesterday morning Gene come over beating on my door with an arm load of "stuff" that he wanted to see if I could separate and make something out of. Included in the pile was a gun, a muzzle brake, a barrel, a bunch of pellets, screws, nuts, bolts, washers, handkerchief, crying towel and a free coupon for something at McDonalds. Lunch I would guess.
I told him to just drop all of it in the middle of the floor. I picked out this Gamo rifle, barrel and muzzle brake, some pellets and the coupon and put them on the bench and told him to throw the rest of it back in his trunk and we would work on the rest of it at a later date.
The Gun was a Gamo S1K, the barrel was a Lother Walther .20 caliber from"Peterdragin" and the Brake was a "Peterdragin brake". I looked over the barrel real close and did a couple of checks on it and was very impressed. That is a super barrel, and as fine machined barrel as you can get for the money.
We installed the barrel and Gene thought that as we were this far along and he had it here, would I go ahead and tune it? Yeah...right Gene!!! Well we did the TurboTune and installed a GRT-III trigger, put it back together and installed "Peterdragin's" muzzle brake. Perfect fit it was.
We did a little test firing prior to doing the chrony testing. I knew immediately it was a winning combination. It just plain felt good. When we (Gene) did the chrony testing, using FTS 11.4 pellets, we come out with about a 760 fps avg. I was expecting to see in the low to possibly mid 700's at best. This turned out to be a great gun.
Rich...Peterdragin... at
peterdragin@comcast.net has a great barrel and brake combo. And for you that have a Gamo that you are planning to keep as a long term companion and also would like a .20 caliber gun, let me suggest to you Peterdragin's combo of the Lothar Walther .20 barrel and matching muzzle brake. It may seem to some just a bit expensive, but let me be the first to tell you, it's worth the investment, especially if you want a .20 caliber and intend to keep it long term. You won't be sorry.
Anyhow...Gene took everything back out to his car and put everything away, grabbed a hammer from under the seat, popped the hood and started hammering on something, slammed the hood, ran around and jumped in and cranked it over. He drove off smoke rolling out the tail pipe and the car backfiring, his arm out the window shaking his fist with thumb raised in the air hollering something and blowing his horn. That's Gene. Ain't no one else like him.
One more point that I would like to make. We did a little pellet testing and found a good example of what many either don't know or find hard to believe sometimes. I have some .20 Copperhead Hyper pellets, 11.3 g and also some Benji-Sher domed guessing 11,.4 that I had in a small Ziploc bag. The Copperheads were shooting anywhere from 120 to 150 fps slower than the FTS pellets. Now that is a lot. The Benji-Sheridan pellets didn't fare much better. The point is that different pellets (or sometimes even different batches of the same pellets) in the same gun or other like guns can make a big difference in both velocity and accuracy.
Rich...ya did gud.. my hats off to ya.
