Stock Repair for a Friend!!

 This is a stock I am repairing for a friend of mine. Its from a Webly that cracked from an accidental barrell slam. I made a simple jig that could open the crack so I could inject marine epoxy,, & then use the wedge in the pic. to apply clamping preasure. In the pics. after I stripped & sanded it you can still see the crack,,I suspect the epoxy soffened the stain/finish & stained the crack. I was dismayed when I saw this,I should have sanded the area first,(I know better). As I had plans of using a dark stain,I hoped it would cover the still visable crack. IT DID!!! Gotta say, after just one coat of stain,even with my "super magnum reading glasses" the crack no longer is visable!! Great pains were taken sanding to preserve the crisp lines on this nice stock. (chemical strip removes clearcoat) Good old elbow grease (sanding) to remove factory stain!! The pics. dont do justice,, its looking really nice!! Ive been sanding all day,, Im gonna go shoot some now!! Tim.

that is a nasty crack, horrible in my eyes but the repair is a work of ART. John in PA, the owner will be glad with the results as I am glad with what you did to my 34 wood stock

Hi Tim very nice repair ,I use epoxy for most of my work it is the best and strongest glue their is even better than gorilla glue it is a true water proof glue the test in marine glues to be a water proof glue is to boil the glued up test piece for 24 hrs if it is still together after that it is a waterproof glue , We used epoxy glues on old 50 plus years boats restoring them and we are talking about a 4 year project and millions of dollars in repairs. Epoxy glues are void filling if the joint is not perfect they still hold great, also alcohol is the thinner as well as for cleaning up as long as it has not set up. Epoxy's don't take a stain well your repair was great. One other thing that came to mind is if your friend has a barrel slam again it could break but not at your repair since the glue joint it stronger than the wood but since all stocks have short grain at the pistol grip this is a week spot, one way is to run a dowel down the center of the pistol grip to make it stronger you could either run it from the bottom of the grip this means you need a grip trim cap to cover the end of the dowel or run it from the inside of the action if you ever do somthing like this cut a groove the length of the dowel so it will go all the way down and not get stopped by the glue in the hole.this way it can squeeze out and the dowel will be all the way in. , just a thought very nice repair howie
