Tim:

What type of digital camera?  What type of storage media? (SD, XD, CF, etc.)  What computer are you using? (PC, Mac)  Basically, you will need to be able to compress any picture you want to post to a size of 100kb or less, typically in a format called .jpeg.  You can do this with free online software found in photobucket as explained in the article on the library (somewhat of a hassle) or perhaps with your email program, depending on which you use.   Then click on attach a file after posting at the bottom of the "post a reply window".  I will send you a PM and talk you thru this.

An easy way to post pics.....
You can do it that way or do it the way I do, much easier.

I take pics with my Rebel XT, great camera.  I just download to my PC, a Gateway laptop, with the Microsoft software that is on my computer.  I then open up my Photobucket account, which was free.

I upload my photos to Photobucket, no compression needed.

I then post a new thread or a reply.

On this forum, click on the HTML code to copy the pic you want to post.  Then right click and paste it in the text.  On the Yellow forum, you copy the IMG code.

This allows you to post full size pics without re-sizing or anything else.  And you can post as many as you want.

Example:

On your text you will show almost two lines of code for the location of the pic.  But when you hit the preview button, all you see is the pic.

Good luck, e-mail me if you have any questions.  Or PM.

Photobucket is easy Tim. Once you have an account, upload your pics. At the bottom of the upload box, theres an auto resizing function. The pics show the rest.

Make sure each picture is on it own line and separated from any other text or it won't work.

Yeah, Photobucket is great.

But you don't need to resize.  You can just post what you uploaded from your computer if you want.  You can also edit, and rotate the pics as well.

resizing
You do need to resize when posting pictures. If you have say a 10 megapixel camera, even if PB would allow you to upload it,the picture would be so big you couldn't see it all. Pictures should be sized so you can see the entire picture without much scrolling around, usually 1200x900 pixels  is about as big as you need. That is where Photobucket comes in, it resizes your pictures automatically for optimum viewing on your screen.

What i meant is that you did not need to resize yourself if using Photobucket.  I was not sure if they resized for you, I just knew that I did not have to do anything.

Thanks for letting me know that they do the resizing for you.

Yes, Photobucket is a PC sort of workaround, but to be sure, it is resizing the photo to low lower resolution and compressing it for web display, probably as a .jpg or .gif  But it is another web site you have to go to, register for and use as an intermediary step just to attach a file to a post.  In a perfect world (ie, the Mac OS) you could just drag and drop the file into this window and it would upload.  But noooooooooooo!  It just names the link to the file, so if it isn't on an on-line server, then you can't see it.  What you see is the file path:

/Users/TECupples/Desktop/P1010045.jpg

As for re-sizing, if you use an inexpensive digital camera, particularly an older model, like say an Olympus C3000 (and perhaps on your not inexpensive Rebel), you can just set the resolution to SQ1 or SQ2 and shoot directly at web-compatible resolution.  Then download to the desktop and upload from the desktop to the forum by attaching a file (like the first picture)

The third possibility is to use your email program to email a picture file.  Most email programs will offer a dialog box that asks at what resolution you want to send the picture.  Choose the size, then click compose and the email program should drop in a re-sized photo you can then copy the resized photo to the desktop and upload, but note the loss of resolution (in the second photo).

And let's not even talk about Photoshop, although if you want to delve into that, Donny has posted some free lessons on You Tube:

Goodnight, all.

Hey thanks for the tutorial.  I just have used what has worked in the past and was relatively easy for a non-techno guy like myself.  The Photobucket route was just the easiest way for me since it resized my photos and all I had to do was copy and paste the HTML link.

Your way is more direct.  I might have to try it.

Tim and all:
One final note, and I will stop being Mr. Know-it-all  --  the word is "bandwidth"
Size matters.  Larger files slow down the system and take more on-line memory to archive.  We all love to post pictures and to view them, but courtesy says we should keep the file sizes relatively small.  So, we shouldn't post 3 pictures when one will do.  If we can, we should crop out large backgrounds and focus on what is important about the image.  For example, that beautiful rifle on the red background - the red in the picture probably makes up more of the file size than all of the rifle, and textured colors like the red background don't compress very well in .jpeg.  So here is your picture of that beautiful rifle resized with a simple crop that results in a smaller file than your original post (about 1/3rd the file size) without any loss of resolution from the original.  I don't know if the picture is only archived on Photobucket and imported into GTA when the thread is opened, or, as I suspect, the photo exists on both photobucket and GTA after the posting.

You don't need any fancy software to resize your pictures.  Most every MS OS already has the neccessary software. Click "START" > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > PAINT, open the picture in Paint, then use the IMAGE tab. In the IMAGE menu, you'll see "attributes" and "stretch / skew". Use the first to see the dimensions of the picture, the second to resize. Change the percentage in each box in the stretch/skew window, using the same number to keep proportions. Check the attributes to see if you've reduced it to the proper size. Remember, 800x600 or 1200x900 is more than big enough.  You'll need to experiment a bit to get  the hang of it but its not hard.
