Longest one yet!!
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:49:01 AM »
The new CFX may only be shooting 750 fps,  but it is dead on accurate.  Scored the longest ground squirrell shot yet...ranged at 76 yards.  He was standing up looking at me.  I touched one off & he just flopped over on his side for a permanent nap  woohoo!!  I'm going to have a hard time waiting for the spring to break before I send it in to Bob.  If it does this at 750 fps, what will it do at 900!!!!  I'm lovin it.

My buddy Jim was blown away as well.   I knew I would hit it, I had a good rock to rest on, I was really surprised when it fell over though!! Those .177 superdomes rock!!  Jim has a RWS Dianna probably 13 years old.  It has never had anything done to it & it still shoots well.  I told him about Bob....I think his will be in the mail soon for a tune.  He can't believe I only paid $200 for this killin machine.

76yds dang!  Nice shooting Ken!  Wow, did you guess the hold-over or did you practice shooting at 50+yds? What kind of scope?

The Superdomes are very accurate and they can certainly hit hard too.  I didn't believe it until earlier today when I got an adult groundhog (~11lbs) with my Diana 36.  Distance was only 21.5yds, but the Superdome went right through its thick scull (at ~860fps MV) which I didn't expect.

Again great shooting at 76yds!

I have the 8.3 superdomes.  I am in the process of ordering some jsb exacts, I don't know how they can get much better though.  The only issues I'm having is keeping the scope on target.  It's been doing good since the last disassembly & loctite session.  I am going to get an accushot one piece mount.  Hell if I can hit them that far out I may have to change out that 4x32 scope as well.

Ken if you are talking about the stock Gamo scope and mounts that is a helluva shot(Actually that is an awesome shot no matter what type of scope and mounts you had.). I think I need to upgrade the mount and scope soon, today I noticed she was creepin a little backwards on me with the stock mounts. I gave em a locktite job on the top screws hopefully that will hold because squirrel season starts Sat.
Gamo CF-X with Leapers 3-9x32ao and GRT-III trigger, also an old 760 pumpmaster with stock painted green, workin on a new addition soon

Yup that's the scope.  I took everything off including the rail.  I put loctite on every thing that turned, including the stop screws.  So far so good.  If I were you I would go ahead & take down & be real careful setting it back up.  I adjusted mine 4 times before finally stripping it.

Good hunting.....

Hey Harry,

The scope is just the stock gammo 4x32.  I have it zeroed on 30 yards.  I have been shooting paper getting it sighted in, so I checked drop at 55 yards, it's only about 1 1/2" when zeroed at 30.  I just settled the x-hairs an inch or so over it's head, smoked him right in the boiler room.

Sounds like your .177 is smoking them out there as well.  Nice shot on the ground hog.  That's pretty impressive getting a pass through.  Mines not hitting that hard!!

Nice shootin' Ken.Making real long shots with air guns is a special thrill.Back in '95 I believe it was I killed a starling @ 144 yards with a RWS 34 and a 4x scope. There was enough moisture on the grass that I could see the 1st shot land too far, 2nd shot short, 3rd shot, Ding Dong.Needed about four feet hold over to get there.Keep it up.

144yds?  wow, major hold-over and of course some luck :)

The longest shot I made was about 60-65yds with my 760 pump on open sights.  I was about 14 1/2 yrs old and a friend of mine was over.  He kept insisting that I take a shot at a bird (don't know what kind) that was sitting on top of the next door neighbor's chimney cap.  After he dared me several times and he bet me $1 I couldn't do it, I pumped it 10X, held over a couple of inches above its head and the BB hit home.  It rolled down the roof and fell behind the house where we lost sight of it because of some trees in the way.  A few minutes later the door bell rang.  It was the neighbor telling my mom that he was reading his Sunday paper in his porch when a dead bird fell on his lap!  We were hiding upstairs but I was $1 richer :)  My parents took the 760 away from me for about a month but I found where they were hiding it and re-acquired it :)  That was 28yrs ago and now I make sure the neighbors are not home when I attempt shots like that :)  Just kidding!

So Harry The Sniper was" born" +- 28 years ago??? Harry you seemed to love shooting from an early age. My parents would'nt alow any airrifles in the house. I had to sneak to my friends houses to shoot a little, but always under adult supervision.

Guys!!,  teach the young ones to shoot but do it responsibly. Nowadays kids only want to spend time in front of the games consoles and in the Malls. They can rather get "up to no good" with dear old dad. At least you know where they are then.

Regards

JOHAN

Very good point Johan!  It's to our interest to get our kids involved with the shooting sport, plinking or hunting, etc. so they don't get into trouble doing "other things".

I actually started when I was 11 but my parents didn't allow me to play witb BBguns either.  A friend of mine had a nice black springer pistol which was his dad's.  He was 12 and I was 11.  I 'd go over to their house and we 'd shoot into a log (no soda cans then, only bottles) in the back yard from like 8yds away.  We made sure we only shot like 15-20 pellets so he wouldn't notice any of them missing.  Well after doing this for like 3mos we used up like 2/3 of the tin and he did notice!  :)

I went without an airgun for about 2yrs when 1 day when I was 13, my uncle bought my cousin a .22 CO2 revolver (It looked like a Colt 45 6-shooter from the Old West).  I 'd go over their house and shoot and when I turned 14, there was a sale at a local Service Merchandise store (what happened to them, did they go out of business?) and convinced my mom to buy me the 760 for $34.95.  I told her that if I get in trouble with it, she can give it to my uncle..  My diplomatic skills were at their best when I wanted something very badly, hehe..  We kept it a secret from my dad for almost a year! :-)  When he found out we explained to him that I was just target shooting with my friends and he was ok with it and let me keep it but said he wasn't real happy about me "plaing with guns".  He had served in the military and had seen an accident where someone got shot and another guy died from a grenade during exercises.  I think that's why he wasn't in favor of guns in the house.  Then some CO2 pistols followed (Shiloh 1861 was my favorite!), a 66 Powermaster which I still have, etc. and when I turned 18 I got into firearms but never lost my passion for airguns.  I have sold almost 1/2 my firearms now to buy more airguns :-)
