? for you experts
« on: June 06, 2008, 06:35:25 AM »
i have a turbo tuned g1 extreme, a stock sierra pro, and a stock 1000s powerline...i usually only shoot targets, and pests up to squirrels and crows, but my brother in law wants to borrow a gun for a raccoon problem he's been having...can any of my guns humanely kill a raccoon?(since its on his property, i'm guessing that he'll be making the shot at under 25 yards...but what distance would be ok to shoot it from?)  if not, i have a patriot coming in...should be here in a week...lol, i KNOW that can take care of it, hahaha.

Dave, either one should handle the task, with a shot to the side of the fuse box. The Daisy has more knock down power, so I would say, if he can shot it accurately, that would be the one. If not then which ever one he can shoot the best.

The G1 can handle it with a well placed shot to the head.

Dave, I won't qualify myself as an expert... but if your brother wants to take out coons with a sub 20 ft.lb airgun ,he'd better be real close and dead on the mark in the brain.Otherwise it won't be fast and will likely require follow up shots...i.e. you're apt to come up with an empty sack. The problem is often not having the perfect angle when they are up in the tree so shot selection is limited. If you have to take body shots, texas heart shots, etc. then you need power. Some airgunners just shoot whatever they have whether it's the right tool or not but when you say "humanely" I'm assuming you mean "kill 'em quick with minimal suffering".In my opinion that will be hard to acheive with 14-15 ft. lb. guns.Coons are tough and sometimes big. You can definitly kill with any of your guns but keep the pellets heavy and try to get within 10 yds. Hope your Patriot is English made. If it's Turkish it might not have the power you are expecting. Mine was so anemic I returned it.Chrony it to be sure.Good luck air gun bro.

Hi Dave,,,

I have a G1 and a powerline and if your powerline is as powerful as mine, and I'll bet it is,,,, then I'd go with the powerline,,, my powerline hits incredibly hard !!   I'd also use Predator pellets if they shoot well from the gun and try and keep the distance to 20 yards or less and definitely go a head shot.  With that scenario I don't see any problem taking out a raccoon, even a large one.

I have taken at least four or five raccoons with my stock gamo hunter 220 in .177 with one well placed head shot each time.  I wouldnt worry too much about it as long as you make em head shots from 15 yards or so. Just be sure you que the music and be prepared for the death dance.                                     peejay

I would feel comfortable with any of your guns using a head shot at 15-20 yards.  I have felled both racoons and feral cats with less horsepower.  Its just shot placement.
