Needed camouflage.....
« on: June 08, 2008, 04:51:48 PM »
Was doing some carpentry work on a hot muggy day....at least I was in the basement which was alot cooler.  Went upstairs to get some water and saw about 9 grackles, starlings and what-not picking on my freshly spread grass seeds.  This will not do!!!!  Of course when I opened the patio door....every bird flew off.  I placed a couple of plants in front of the doorway as a shield...and sat with my Diana model 24 waiting.  About 5 minutes later a few birds flew back and started picking on the seeds....but they were off to the side of the doorway.  Eventually a few more came back...and a few started to walk towards the doorway......here are the results in a span of 20 minutes......  2 grackles and 1 starling.  My Diana model 24 only shoots 495fps...and I was using Crosman Competition Wad Cutters....range was 8 meters to 12 meters....    I had another shot at another grackle....it was about 6 meters away....and I put the cross-hairs on his chest, pulled the trigger and missed.  My rifle is "zeroed" in for 20 meters....and I think the pellet went over his head.  After the three birds were on the ground....the rest of the birds didn't land on my lawn anymore.

Before I got into air gunning seriously....I never noticed those grackles.  They might have been around a few years ago....but I think with global warming....they've really extended their range and coming and staying up "North".  Reading all those posts by PeakChick on nailing her grackles....I took notice....and realized we have alot in Montreal now.  Across the boulevard from my house is a large field with a bike path and electric pylons....so I can't shoot at/in that field :o(  ... at feeding time there's about 30 to 40 grackles, huge ravens, crows and starlings over there.  Sometimes they come over to my backyard.....God willing...I might get a shot at them.

Btw...In my original post I forgot to mention....all three birds took off after I shot them.....they did a slow semi-circle in the air and dropped back down.  By the time they were on the ground and fluttering abit....I had already reloaded....took aim and fired again to put them out of their misery.  Didn't want them to suffer.
