Bent CFX Spring Serious?
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:51:43 PM »
I finally opened up my CFX.  It has about 750 rounds through it.  I found that the main spring has a little bit of a kink in it.  Is this a big deal?  It still seems to shoot OK and its a lot less "twangy" since I did a lube job on it.

It's not uncommon to find a canted (curvature in the spring)  spring in a factory gun and is commonly caused by excessive dieseling or detonation as well as using heavy pellets.  In fact, new after market springs can cant as well but not nearly so readily if the spring guide and top hat are fitted to the spring and the top hat sized to the piston ID.

Depending on the cant, it won't usually cause any harm but can cause unwanter spring vibration and wearing of the guide and often a grinding noise as the cocking foot passes over and rubs on the spring when cocking and/or returning to battery.

A bent spring, where the spring is bent over the length of a several coils  is another thing. If it is bent much and especially on the tophat end, it should definitely be replaced.

I never had my CFX apart besides a GRT III until the spring broke after about 4000 rounds. When I disassembled it, the spring was broken a few coils up on the guide side and showed signs of a stress crack about 8 coils down from the piston side. It also showed signs of a slight bend. Hard telling if it was bent the whole time or after it broke, but it sure shot good. I noticed the spring guide on mine was awfully loose on the spring and that could have allowed it to stress in one direction or the other.
