Right at last
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:01:28 PM »
After much enquiring and investigating and bothering people with my questioning I finally go to the doing bit and got my .177 440 back together, new seal in place and ready for action.  I have fired about 50 shots through it since I replaced the the last seal I bodged recently.  When I  put the new seal in this time, it all went smoothly and I thoroughly sanded and finished bits I should have done properly the first time.  I added some heavy tar on the Maccari spring and it really is a different gun.  There is a picture of the 440 and a five shot group from only 10 meters (not sighted in yet just testing groups) which is the best it or I have previously shot.  I am looking forward to trying it out to 50 meters when I can get away from work. I am in the process of getting a chronograph so I can do some experimenting.
Thanks to all for any advice given.
Rob

P.S Next project is to get a decent scope and mounts.
 :)

Good going Rob,

It looks like you have a good shooter there, and will be able to enjoy it now.

As for the scope and mounts, Natchez has the Bushnell Trophy 4x24x40 on sale for $99.95, I have 3 of them, and (knock on wood) have never had a problem ! The Accurashot one piece mount is a fine and recomended mount for airguns, you won't go wrong with it..

Thanks Bill,
It was a bit of a mission but very rewarding.  I have found I can get stuff from the states quicker than in Australia in most cases.  I would pay at least 3 x that over here for a scope like that and the tasco fixed power I already have cost me $160 Australian dollars so about $140 us.  If you reckon they are ok I will give one a go. Are they Mil dot or Duplex? and does it have an adjustable AO?

Sounds great to me Bill I am about to look at that site now.. How many shots does it take to break in a seal and what actually happens? Do air guns usually increase in power a bit when the seal breaks in?

Well Rob,

The number of shots needed varies from person to person, it runs 200 - 500 and some say more ?

Most gain "some" this also varies, fps as they seat. The seal will ware in, and lubricant will flow around and help with combustion, and that is what you will get !

Your rifle may also require you to look for a new "favorite" pellet, they change sometimes after a tune-up.

You will be able to add your findings to this variable question. I have a Gamo 890, and have never noticed a change in her, accuracy has been very good from the start, velocity as far as I can tell is the same, she hits hard, but I have not bought a crony yet ! Been to busy shootin and acquiring older shooters that I loved inmy youth. I feel that I can't shoot a crony ! :)

Ave a Good day M8 ! And watch out for them funnel webs ! lol :)

I know that is true! always greener. I don't even know anyone who even owns an airgun where I live let alone get advice .  Thats why I like this site so much.  It will be better when I get a bit more knowledge on the subject of airguns and am able to answer some questions instead of always asking them.  I live right up the top of the Northern Territory where there is great fishing and hunting if you like big stuff but I would love to have a go at a groundhog or a squirrel with my 440.  ha ha it is true the grass is always greener.

I will email you a couple of photos
